Smash the rich, save the base. Wayne Swan finds $17bn in cuts to deliver surplus

Matthew Franklin, Chief Political Correspondent The Australian 9th May 2012

LABOR has scrapped its plan to cut business taxes and will instead pour $5 billion into its electoral heartland, sacrificing part of $33.6bn in budget cuts to an unashamed push to reconnect with the nation's battlers and middle class.

Facing certain parliamentary rejection of his plan to cut the corporate tax rate from 30 to 29 per cent using mining tax receipts, Wayne Swan last night cut his losses, using his 2012-13 budget to instead boost family and welfare payments. Full Story HERE.

COMMENT: Smoke and mirrors! This government long ago descended into farce and has zero credibility with most Australians. The Liberals would be little better. Both major parties need to be out of Canberra off our backs and out of our pockets.

One Nation is the last refuge for every patriotic Aussie battler, struggling family, retiree (self funded or otherwise), those on the land, workers, small and medium businesses and genuine entrepreneurs. Wayne Swan says he'll make further budget cuts to protect surplus target

Ben Packham and Lanai Vasek. The Australian 9thMay 2012

WAYNE Swan has vowed to make even tougher budget cuts over the next 12 months if updated budget forecasts suggest he will fall short of his promised surplus target.

Less than 24 hours after unveiling $33 billion in savings, the Treasurer gave an emphatic “yes” when asked it he would make further cuts to armour-plate his slender $1.5 billion surplus.

“We produce a budget update at the end of the year, it's called MYEFO in all the jargon, and we adjust at the end of the year in MYEFO,” he told ABC radio.

The mid-year economic and fiscal outlook is delivered at the end of the calendar year and contains revised budget forecasts for the remaining six months of the financial year.

Last year's budget predicted a $22 billion deficit, which blew out to $37 billion at MYEFO and $44 billion in last night's budget.

The government unveiled a dramatic change of course in last night's budget, junking promised business tax cuts to pay for voter handouts to ease the impact of its carbon tax.

The Coalition, which had refused to pass the one per cent business tax cut because it was linked to Labor's mining tax, today signalled it would pass the cost of living assistance measures, including a boost in family payments and handouts for welfare recipients.

“We have an inclination, given all of the pressure that families are under right now, particularly given the carbon tax hit that they're about to get in a few weeks time, not to oppose these particular payments,” Tony Abbott said. Full Story HERE

Barnaby Joyce warns government over lift to debt ceiling.

Enda Curran. Dow Jones Newswires 9th May 2012

NATIONAL Party senator Barnaby Joyce has warned the government against plans to raise the nation's borrowing ceiling.

Senator Joyce today raised the prospect of a prolonged debate before any raising of the debt limit. Story HERE

A Lesson from Ross Greenwood

Here's another way to look at the Debt Ceiling:

Let's say, you come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighbourhood ... and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings.

What do you think you should do?

Raise the ceilings, or pump out the (ummmm) "effluent"?

Crisis escalates as insurrection breaks German control of Europe

Ambrose Evans Pritchard – The Uk Telegraph

The political dam has broken in Europe. German Chancellor Angela Merkel no longer has enough allies in the club of EU prime ministers to impose her hairshirt agenda. Her methodical plans are disintegrating on every front.

The immediate fate of Greece - and the euro - is in the hands of a boyish motorcycle Marxist. Syriza leader deal Alexis Tsipras has vowed to tear up the hated Memorandum, as the EU-IMF "troika" loan package is known.

He showed no sign of backing off as he met his country's president and began talks on the formation of an implausible Left front. "The popular verdict clearly renders the bailout null and void," he said.

To those who warn that such defiance means an unstoppable lurch towards full default, a banking crash and EMU expulsion, he retorts that Greece has the "ultimate weapon". It can bring down the whole European system if EU leaders refuse to soften the terms.

This bluff may be called. "Patience among the creditor countries is running out," said Blanka Kolenikova from IHS Global Insight. Germany's media says finance minister Wolfgang Schauble is itching to force Greece out of the euro as a salutary example, sure that Europe is strong enough to withstand the shock. This, in turn, is an illusion waiting to be punctured.

Arnaud Mares from Morgan Stanley said a Greek exit would set off "massive deposit flight" from all the vulnerable EMU states. "It could unravel the single currency altogether." Full Story HERE

China officially asks to colonise a part of Western Australia-for Money

SOS News 5th May

China to create food bowl in Western Australia as the Shanghai Zhongfu group wants to grow its own irrigated sugar cane in the $311m second-stage expansion of the Ord irrigation projectassited all the way fora feeby our past prime minister Bob Hawke, who also is setting up a massive beef export meat business to China in the same area...

April has been a month of policy disasters for Australian agriculture defining its now bleak future

Delivering a mortal blow to the dairy industry, our disingenuous ALP government, aided and abetted by traitorous so-called primary producer organizations such as the National Farmers Federation has not said boo about the largest ever shipment of Australian dairy cows and heifers shipped to China in the past eight months.

To top off this farmer coup-de-grace, former Prime Minister Bob Hawke is acting as gigolo for a Chinese conglomerate offering to buy 15,000 hectares of prime farming country east of Kunnunurra in Western Australia.

The Shanghai Zhongfu group wants to grow its own irrigated sugar cane in the $311m second-stage expansion of the Ord irrigation project.

Another 13 companies and individual farmers are competing against the Chinese after submitting final expressions of interest to the West Australian government to farm all or part of the new area.

Should the Chinese offer be accepted this massive expansion of the sugar industry in Northern Australia will spell disaster for Queensland cane growers.

Zhongfu, trading as Kimberley Agricultural Investments, is also in discussion with the WA, NT and federal governments and traditional owners the Miriuwung Gajerrong Corporation to develop a further 15,000 ha of prime black soil downs country on the NT side of the Kimberley border.

A sweetener in Hawke’s bid is to build is to build a $100m sugar mill in the Ord region.

Hawke’s company also proposes to establish a super, 500,000 head a year abattoir in the east Kimberley to supply the beef export market to China.

This venture could also wipe out a proposal to build a large abattoir in the Cloncurry district of North West Queensland.

This venture will also spell disaster for Australia’s largest pastoralist, the Australian Agriculture Company which has plans to start building an abattoir at Katherine.

KAI says it needs 30-40,000 ha of sugar crops to support a financially viable sugar mill and biofuel production.

In return for such a large investment the company is demanding all environmental and native title approvals be handed to it on a plate within two years.

SOS-NEWS have copies of the WA Governments generic farm purchase contracts which are tailored towards a significant indigenous partnership arrangement for any purchaser in the Kimberley region.

It will be of interest to individual farmers bidding for land if these arrangements are included in any Chinese deal.

WA Farmers Federation president Dale Park said his organization was unlikely to oppose the Chinese bid. Full Story HERE also second storyHERE

Nigel Farage - There Will Be an Attempt to Install a Dictatorship

With escalating fears regarding the stability of the eurozone, today King World News interviewed former LBMA commodities broker and trader and current MEP Nigel Farage to get his take on the situation. Farage told KWN he believes there will be an attempt, within months, to install a dictatorship in Europe. Here is what Farage had to say about the deteriorating situation: “Frankly, the whole thing is falling apart. And in the middle of all of this, Mrs Merkel came out and said, ‘The fiscal treaty cannot be renegotiated, and it must hold.’ So, I suppose, for once, we’ve got the Germans providing the humor, because this thing isn’t going to hold.” Full Story HERE

Ron Paul Is Hosting A Hearing On Ending The Federal Reserve Right Now

Grace Wyler Business Insider 8th May 2012

Texas Congressman Ron Paul will once again face off against his central bank nemesis this morning, during a Congressional hearing on monetary policy and the Federal Reserve.

The hyped-up hearing is titled "The Federal Reserve System: Mend It Or End It?," and will be hosted by the House Finance Committee's Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology Subcommittee, which oversees the Federal Reserve and which, incidentally, is chaired by Ron Paul.

The hearing will feature testimony from several economists and lawmakers, all of whom have some problem with the central bank. No one who works for the Fed is scheduled to testify.

The subcommittee will also consider several bills, including Paul's Federal Reserve Board Abolition Act, which would abolish the Federal Reserve, its Board of Governors, and eliminate the Federal Reserve Act.

“More and more people are beginning to understand just how destructive the Federal Reserve's monetary policy has been,” Paul said in a press release. “I hope that this hearing will kickstart a serious discussion on the need to rein in the Fed." Full Story HERE

Craig Thomson to fight civil action against Health Services Union over escorts, perks: Lanai Vasek The Australian 7th May 2012

FAIR Work Australia has recommended civil action in the Federal Court against a former Health Services Union official, believed to be embattled MP Craig Thomson.

Outlining the findings of a four-year investigation into the union, the industrial umpire said HSU members' money was spent on escort services during the period in which Mr Thomson was its national secretary.

“The investigation reveals an organisation that abjectly failed to have adequate governance arrangements in place to protect union members' funds against misuse” FWA general manager Bernadette O'Neill said.

“Substantial funds were, in my view, spent inappropriately including on escort services, spousal travel, and excessive travel and hospitality expenditure.”

The majority of 181 contraventions workplace laws and HSU rules identified in the FWA report related to a former official of the union, Ms O'Neill said.

The contraventions also relate two two current HSU officials and a former auditor.

The FWA today did not name the individuals facing civil action, but Mr Thomson was national secretary of the union from 2002 to 2007, when he was elected MP for the NSW Central Coast seat of Dobell.

“The great majority of contraventions relate to the former official,” Ms O'Neill said. “Notices of contraventions have been issued to the individuals concerned.”

Mr Thomson, who was elected as a NSW Labor MP but now sits on the crossbench, has been accused of misusing more than $100,000 on personal purchases, including on prostitutes, when head of the HSU.

In a statement today, Mr Thomson maintained his innocence. Full story HERE
