Nelson Programme Launch October 1

Nelson will experience its biennial influx of well-heeled music lovers this summer, with the 13th Adam Chamber Music Festival promising its keenly awaited line up of international music treats.

The programme was launched at a function at the Council Chamber last night (Oct 1), but advance ticket sales have already seen record take-up of the Festival Pass to see all concerts.

Artistic Directors Helene Pohl and Gillian Ansell say they are delighted with the stellar line up for the coming festival.

“We have the sensational Ying Quartet from America, distinguished English pianist Kathryn Stott who people will know from her partnership with YoYo Ma, there is the Song Company from Australia, and then there are our wonderful New Zealand composers and chamber musicians.”

Chair of the Nelson Music Festival Trust Colleen Marshall says the Festival

enhances the musical life of the city and brings musically aware people from around the world to Nelson.
“The Adam Festival is recognised as a major drawcard on the chamber music scene and brings in people who stay for several days and enjoy all the region has to offer in food, wine and the arts,” she says. “And it is not just for out of towners – there are Nelsonians who rush back from their holidays to attend concerts and a programme of free events that includes a kids’ concert, master classes, meet the artists sessions and performances from the Troubadours who will be popping up in venues around the city.

Mayor of Nelson, Rachel Reese says the Council is delighted to be able to support the festival through the Economic Development Agency’s event promotion funding.

“The Adam Festival has developed an enviable reputation as a world class event. It is an excellent fit for the city, as Nelson has an environment that nurtures the best in the creative arts. We look forward to welcoming the Adam Festival community to our city again in 2015.

“This event is a major drawcard for chamber music lovers from around New Zealand and the world, and those that do attend the Festival both stay and spend in Nelson. The Nelson City Council is proud to support an event which brought in over $2.3 million into the local economy in 2013.”

The Adam Festival began in 1992 with an enthusiastic group of professional musical friends performing just five concerts in Nelson’s intimate, smaller venues to recapture the essence of chamber music performance. This remains the essence of the festival – the warm acoustics of the venues, the quality of the music, the added attractions of Nelson in summer and the charisma the New Zealand String Quartet make it a favourite on the calendar for internationally renowned musicians and for chamber music enthusiasts from as far away as Europe and the USA.

The Adam Chamber Music Festival begins with a gala dinner at the Woollaston Estate cellars on January 29 and concludes with the Grand Finale at Nelson Cathedral on Saturday February 7. More information and bookings at
