PNS African Caribbean Transfer and Parental Partnership Pilot / MECSS / Work with SLT in five primary schools to enhance the capacity of African Caribbean pupils to maintain or improve performance on transfer to secondary school. / Apr 2006 to Apr 2007 /
  • Meetings and discussions held with Head teachers of all schools.
  • Whole staff presentation in one school.
  • Action plans written and about to be enacted in three schools

All Children Matter Mentoring project for Years 6 to 9 African Caribbean pupils in . / Children’s Fund / One to one mentoring for African Caribbean pupils at risk of underachieving or exclusion in twelve primary and six secondary schools in North Hert / Apr 2004 to Apr 2006 /
  • Lower exclusions.
  • Less concerns expressed about performance in school.
  • Improved punctuality.
  • Improved identification of specific learning needs for some pupils.
  • Increased communication with parents.

Stevenage African Caribbean Supplementary School / Standard’s Fund Out of School Hours Learning Fund / Provide two hours tuition in Mathematics for twenty Years 5 to 11 African Caribbean pupils from 9.30 to 11.30 Saturday mornings, in term time. Used to provide three hour in Maths and English but haven’t yet found replacement for English teacher. l / Sept 2002 to present. /
  • Every pupils who’s attended the school regularly has achieved the expected level or above in their Key Stage 2 and 3 SATS
  • Four pupils who attended the school from 2002 and did their GCSEs last year, achieved grades B, B, C and D respectively in Maths and C, C, C and C respectively in English

Learning mentoring through African Caribbean Team / MECSS / One to one mentoring for African Caribbean pupils at risk of underachievement or exclusion in 2 primary and eleven secondary schools in Hitchin, Letchworth, Stevenage, Watford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead. / 2000 to present /
  • Reduced exclusions, improved attendance and engagement for target pupils.
  • Two twin brothers excluded repeatedly since Year 7 and seriously at risk of permanent exclusion throughout Years 10 & 11 remained in school primarily because of the support of their Mentor; they went on to achieve 8 A to C grades and 7 A to C grades in respectively in their GCSEs. These boys had also attended the StevenageSupplementarySchool for Year 9 to Year 11.
