Measuring liquid and dry ingredients

Liquid:

Use a clear measuring cup with a spout

Measure at eye level on a flat surface

You would use a liquid measuring cup for ingredients such as water, oil, milk etc.

Dry:

Use dry measuring cups

Overfill and scrape the excess with a spatula

Pack brown sugar

Don’t pack dry ingredients like sugar, flour, cake mix etc.

Measuring Spoons: ¼ tsp, 1tsp, ½ tsp, 1/8 tsp, 1 Tbsp

(You would use measuring spoons for ingredients such as spices, baking soda, baking powder etc)

Measuring Cups: ¼ cup, ½ cup, 1 cup, 1/3 cup

Abbreviations: cup = c.

Tablespoon = Tbsp.

Teaspoon = tsp.

Ounce = oz.

Pound = lbs.

Conversions

½ tsp= 2.5 ml

1 tsp = 5 ml

1 Tbsp = 15 ml or 3 tsp

1 cup = 250 ml

½ cup = 125 ml

¼ cup = 60 ml

4 cups= 1 litre

A Few Notes about safety in the kitchen

•Remember to preheat the oven. (Warm it up before putting your food in!)

•Chop, slice, cut on a cutting board!

•Pull the oven rack out and use oven mitts when removing anything from the oven.

•Don’t leave your things on the counter while you are cooking!

•Never unplug electrical appliances by pulling on the cord, grasp the plug.

•Unplug electrical appliances when not in use.

•Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry in the Home.Ec room and remember to tie back your hair.

•Wash your pots and pans first, then change your water and wash your glasses and plates. Knives shouldalways be washed separately and never thrown in the water with other dishes.

•Dishes and counters are to be washed with hot soapy water.

•An apron is important because it protects you from being burned by hot food and protects food fromyour germs.

•If you break glass; tell the teacher, sweep up big pieces, put them in a box before puttingit in the garbage, then use a wet paper towel to clean up the tiny shards.

Grease Fires

•If the fire is small, cover the pan with a lid and turn off the burner.

•Throw lots of baking soda or salt on it. Never use flour, which can explode or make the fire worse.

•Smother the fire with a wet towel or other large wet cloth.

•Use a fire extinguisher. Never throw water on it.
