One day in class, I was zoning out, drawing some pictures, staring at the floor,

Then the teacher interrupted me, and I thought “How inconsiderate is that?!”

Then he asked me a question about a big old set of numbers.

He said, “If you can tell the class how to find the mean, median and mode,

I will let you keep on zoning out, drawing pictures and staring at the floor.”

And I said, “I accept your offer, because believe it or not I have been listening,

and as a way of thanking you for not hassling me,

I will explain these measures of central tendency of which you speak.”

So I collected my thoughts and cleared my throat,

and stood up bravely in front of all my supporters and detractors,

I explained that mean is just another word for average,

which is found by adding all the numbers in a series and

dividing the sum by how many numbers are there.

The median is the middle, which isn’t hard to find

when you write the numbers in order from smallest to largest.

Start at both ends, crossing off the lowest and highest, keep it up until there’s only one left.

That one is the median, but sometimes there are two,

Just average those two numbers and call it the median.

Now the only one left is the mode, that’s the one that happens the most.

Sometimes there are two or three or even more, that’s OK, just call them all the Mode !
