MDBM 10e SAM Assignment Instructions

This document contains instructions needed to do Problems and Exercises from Chapter 9 in Modern Database Management 10th edition, written by Hoffer, Ramesh, and Topi, published by Prentice Hall.

You must request a Teradata SQL Assistant account for use in a specific course on Teradata Student Network (TSN). You can find instructions for doing this under the Apply & Do area in the Teradata Database selection on TSN. We have set up a generic course for the associated Problems and Exercises. To register your SQL Assistant account, you should select

  • University: University of Dayton
  • Instructor: Hoffer
  • Course: Modern Database Management SAM
  • Password: see instructions at the beginning of the Problems and Exercises for the SAM data mart in Chapter 9 of Modern Database Management

Then you can enter the SQL Username and Password you want to use to access the database for the associated Problems and Exercises, and then enter your e-mail address.

Once you have your SQL Assistant account, you will want to download various documents from TSN, which you will need as reference resources for the Problems and Exercises found in Chapter 9 of Modern Database Management, 10th edition:

  • If you are unfamiliar with using Teradata SQL Assistant, you will want to read the Teradata Database Web Site Overview document found via a link near the top of the SQL Assistant landing page and the Teradata SQL Assistant Web Edition User Manual found via a link near the bottom of the SQL Assistant landing page.
  • Near the bottom of the SQL Assistant landing page, click on the Teradata Database User Manuals link and then download three user manuals: the Data Manipulation Statements, Functions and Operators, and Messages pdf files. You’ll need the Messages file to understand error messages you get when you write SQL statements that have mistakes (yes, you will make mistakes, trust me!). For various Problems and Exercises you will have to find certain SQL commands in the other manuals and then use them to find specified analytic results from the database.
  • At the bottom of the SQL Assistant Login page, click on the link for Database Descriptions, then click on MicroStrategy Data Sets, and then click on the More Details for the db_samwh database; download the SAM.pdf file. You can use this file when you need metadata about the database.
  • When you login to this database, you need to provide only your SQL Assistant Username and Password; you will be automatically connected to the right database for the associated Problems and Exercises.

Now you are ready to login to your SQL Assistant Account and do the Problems and Exercises in Chapter 9 for this database.
