Md. Moshiur Rahman
I am studying for my PhD in the Materials Engineering Department at the Open University. My research topic is entitled “A fundamental experimental and theoretical study of fatigue crack propagation in polycrystalline materials”.
I obtained the degree of BSc Engineering (mechanical) from the Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT), Khulna, Bangladesh in 1990. I then joined the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, a government research organization of Bangladesh in 1991. I worked there as an Assistant Engineer and thereafter as a Senior Engineer until January 2001. I was awarded the degree of MSc in Mechanical Engineering (from my research) at the University of Glasgow in 2003. The research topic for my MSc was entitled “Crack tip plasticity in mixed mode loading under controlled yielding conditions”.
I am pleased to have the opportunity to undertake my research here. The Department is well equipped with laboratory facilities, computational codes and software for performing my research. The people in the Department help to create a good working environment.
The objective of my research is to provide insight into the mechanism of fatigue crack propagation in polycrystalline materials. The work includes experimental and theoretical investigation of the crack tip as well as crack wake stress and strain fields as a function of loading history under both constant and variable amplitude loading. My experimental study includes mainly non-destructive high energy synchrotron x-ray diffraction strain measurement technique. Experiments are performed at ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility), Grenoble, France. Aluminium alloy AA-5091 Compact Tension (CT) specimens with different loading history are used in the current study.
My theoretical investigation involves analytical fracture mechanics calculations and finite element analysis based on the experimental results. Finite element code ABAQUS will be used in finite element modelling. ß Please make this more clear
Real Applications
I hope that my work will contribute to … ß Please fill this bit in, giving some examples if you can
