OUR PHILOSOPHY

It’s our goal at McFadden Intermediate to help students participate in lifelong

activities that lead to better fitness. Our focus is for students to learn games in

a positive and non threatening environment where teamwork and cooperation are

the primary objectives. Students are likely to increase their participation in sports

and activities if they are having fun.

Our program offers many opportunities for students to become physically active.

In keeping with the framework for physical education, we offer a variety of

activities for the students to choose from. These include individualized sports,

cooperative games, and team sports where cooperation, sportsmanship, and

leadership are encouraged. Through these experiences, we hope to instill in our

students a sense of personal responsibility to maintain a healthy body and

appreciate the quality of life that comes from being physically and mentally fit.

PHYSICAL FITNESS PROGRAM

At McFadden we test the students twice during the year for the FitnessGram

which is the California’s State Test. We begin the year with the pre-test in

August, and then again test the students in April where we hope to see

improvement in their scores.

These tests measure student’s flexibility, upper body strength, cardiovascular

endurance, and abdominal strength.

Fitness is an integral part of our yearly physical fitness program with students

exercising daily, running weekly, and participating in activities throughout the

year. We also have the classes do Cross-Fit on Fridays. The students are also

required to take part in the Fitness at Home which is located in their agendas.

We encouraged the families to complete this with their kids. You can also choose the various free apps. to complete your workout.

Examples of free workout apps:

Sworkit

Johnson & Johnson official 7 minute workout

Fitstar 7 minute workout

MAX capacity

Adolescents should be participating in cardiovascular exercises daily to keep

physically fit. Studies show that vigorous exercise three times per week for at

least thirty minutes can help reduce the chance of obesity which can lead to

heart disease.

Physical Education Expectations

All students are encouraged to wear the McFadden PE uniform with tennis shoes

and socks each day. Should a student forget their uniform, they can borrow a

loaner set for the PE period. Students will also need to purchase a combination

lock and will be assigned a PE locker to hold their clothes. There is no sharing

of these lockers, as students are responsible for their own items.

All PE clothes and locks can be purchase at any time.

PE Shirt: $10.00 PE Short: $10.00 Lock: $5.00

PE Bag: $3.00 (free when you purchase all 3 items)

Grading and Evaluations

Students success in our program is evaluated by measuring effort and

improvement. Our system is designed to maximize each student’s chance for

success. A student’s grade is determined by the following criteria:

1.Participation – 30% semester (10% every 6 week block)

2.Activities – 20% semester (10% every 6 week block)

3.Running Days – 40% semester

4.Fitness at Home – 10% semester (5% every 6 week block)

Medical Excuses

Any student who needs to be excused from activities because of a health issue,

may bring a note from home which can be used for 2 days. However, students

must still dress out for PE. After the 2 days, the students must have a note from

the doctor in order to be excused from physical activity. There is no exceptions

to this policy.
