2. JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose

As a key memberof Coventry University Online, a recently established company and wholly-owned subsidiary of the University Group, the Associate Lecturer will be part of the Tutor Services Team and will be responsible for quality driven learning facilitationon a module based system toa cohort of students through the FutureLearn platform.

A subject expert,the Associate Lecturer will have expertise in teaching business related subjects at postgraduate level. The post holder will be comfortable using technology to enable effective support to large cohorts of African students at distance, utilizing the FutureLearn platform, this will include ‘live’ sessions, forums and dealing with specific queries and questions through email. The Associate Lecturer will have responsibility for, with the support of Module Leaders, preparation and delivery of learning support to individuals and/or groups, to mark coursework, assignments, projects and examinations. The ability to deliver clear feedback on exercises and assignments is essential as well as ensuring that teaching challenges thinking, fosters debate and develops the ability of the students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To organise, prepare and deliver learning facilitation to individuals and/or groups across a range of online modes, via the FutureLearn platform.
  1. To mark coursework, assignments, projects and examinations, with the support of senior academic staff. Giving clear and actionable feedback to students via online forums
  1. To ensure that all modes of teaching and support challenges thinking, fosters debate and develops the ability of the students to engage in critical discourse and rational thinking.
  1. Embracing accessible diversity that Online courses will champion, ensuring students succeed irrespective of back ground.
  1. To be innovative and seek ways of developing and improving own teaching performance, practicesand students’ learning by reviewing effectiveness and identifying areas for improvement, drawing upon feedback from various sources.
  1. To apply knowledge gained from applied research, scholarship and/or external professional contexts to ensure learning support is highly relevant enabling the development of skills to flourish and progress in the workplace.
  1. To effectively use technology and Online applications to create a learning environment that enables progression and development
  1. To drive learning by employing formative and summative feedback and supporting students to demonstrate course learning outcomes.
  1. To be an integral and effective part of a pastoral support system, ensuring an excellent student experience for all.
  1. To undertake continuing professional development relating to role as a lecturer and in relation to subject expertise.
  1. To undertake regular meetings (online or by phone) with the Tutor Services Manager and Module Leaders to assess progress and ensure knowledge of module and course development is up to date.
  1. To liaise with the Progression Coach, via the Tutor Services Manager, with a view to highlight any student that requires additional support.
  1. To abide by the University health and safety policies and practices.

4.PERSON SPECIFICATION

ATTRIBUTES / ESSENTIAL / ADVANTAGEOUS
Education/Qualifications / Masters degree in an appropriate subject
Or (if from Professional practice background) a good Honours Degree
and/ or appropriate professional qualification and membership / Active membership or fellowship of a professional body
Recognised teaching qualification
Teaching Experience / Recent experience of teaching in a higher educational setting
Evidence of good/innovative pedagogic practice
Or (If from Professional practice background) evidence of high quality presentation skills, and evidence of coaching, or mentoring and teaching other professionals
Experience of using technology to deliver learning support to large numbers of distance students
Experience of driving learning by employing formative and summative feedback and supporting students to demonstrate course learning outcomes / Experience and/or knowledge of using FutureLearn or similareducation and learning platforms
Job-related skillsand capabilities / Ability to work independently, to take the initiative, and to innovate
Commitment to delivering high quality services to students and external clients
Good organisational skills
High level of proficiency in ICT and understanding of its application to teaching and learning support / Evidence of disseminating own ‘good practice’ effectively to others and of taking up ‘good practice’ from other sources into own work
Interpersonal Skills / Effective oral and written communication skills in both individual and group situations
Effective ability to communicate with staff and students using online mediums
Ability work as a member of a team or group
Ability to relate to students with diverse backgrounds, ages and experience from the Online global community
Ability to relate to a range of external clients and partners of the university from the private/public/voluntary sectors / Experience of mentoring or supporting more junior or less experienced colleagues
