Divisions:
Junior Division:student with less than two years of sewing instruction.
Senior Division: student with more than two years of sewing instruction.
Categories: Students may submit one garment in the “Fashion” category & one garment in the “American History” category.
American History
Fashions from American History: period attire garments from the founding of America up through the early 1900s. These garments can be hand or machine sewn, but the design must be period attire.
Fashion
Separates: one-piece garment such as shorts, skirt, shirt, or top.
Simple Ensemble: two or more coordinated pieces of attire or a one-piece pants outfit.
Dresses: any one-piece unit, which uses a skirt or culottes bottom.
Jackets/Outerwear: lightweight jacket, coat, rain or cold weather jacket, coat or cape.
Party/Prom: garments suitable for formal occasions like a prom.

Fashion Photo Requirements: Contestants must e-mail three digital images of their contest entry being modeled by them or the person they made the garment for. Please send a full front photo and two other frontal poses that include your smiling face. Photos of garments on dress forms or garments stretched out on a rug are not acceptable and your entry will be disqualified. Please use an uncluttered background and good lighting. You should accessorize your garment, just like fashion photographers do for a photo shoot. These pictures will be used in the Fashion Design Contest Fashion PowerPoint, showcasing you and your garment to the members of NJDAR. This digital fashion show will be presented at the NJDAR Spring Luncheon. Your contest entry indicates that NJDAR is permitted to use your images in this show. This is the only purpose for these images. They will not appear anywhere else. They will not be used to judge the garment. Do not send printed photos – they will not be accepted for this requirement. To simplify keeping track of all the garment photos, please name your photos using the following naming guide to identify your pictures when they are emailed:

You may have to send each picture in a separate email, depending on the size of the picture and the limits of the sending and receiving e-mail service providers.
Judging of garments based on the quality of construction, creative use of materials and/or embellishments, difficulty, choice of pattern & materials and general appearance. In addition to the winners of the different category prizes, there will be two “Best of Show Awards” for creative skill & technical merit.
