FROM LAFAYEETE TWP. TRUSTEES
We've seen some letters to the editor regarding the proposed emergency services building for Lafayette fire and rescue that have included some wildly incorrect information. The community meeting we hosted a couple of weeks ago to answer questions was low attendance. But of those attending, some were pretty dug in against the project relying on that incorrect information. Until ...
We answered their questions. Additionally, knowing it is hard to trust these days, we also pointed out that past actions are a good indication of future performance. And when it comes to taxes, this board has an excellent track record. We do not collect extra voted taxes that you typically find in other townships - road levies, operating levies, cemetery levies, zoning levies etc. Additionally, we have rolled back (lowering collection) of the original voted police levy 3 times. We only collect what we need. We have a voted ambulance levy on the books that we haven't collected for 15 years because we fund ambulance purchases out of the fire & emergency rescue fund. We only collect what we need. We have every reason to believe we have cost saving opportunities in interest rates, public utility availability and by bidding every aspect of the construction enough to roll back this levy before it even begins collecting. If approved, once that mortgage is paid off, be it 5 years or 10, that levy goes away. It is projected at 15 originally in order to keep the financial impact as low as possible on our residents. This is all information that we know is important to get out to our residents. To that end, we have prepared a Q&A (attached) and I have highlighted an item where misinformation has been floated which we believe of particular concern to your residents.
