Mavericks Philosophy: The focus of our AAU club is unique in that it is intended to complement busy family schedules and allow kids to participate in multiple sports. It was originally started to allow kids to play on both competitive traveling soccer and basketball teams at the same time. Additionally, for kids not on middle school teams yet, we encourage them to play in Parks and Rec basketball leagues as well as participate on the AAU team. The philosophy of the club is centered on the following:

  • SKILLS: Focus on building player skills that will help them play at the next school level.
  • SCHEDULE: Build a schedule complementary to competitive soccer schedules and P&R basketball schedules, and emphasizing local tournament play to hold down overnight travel costs (some overnight travel may still be required).
  • ENJOYMENT: Work to create an environment that balances serious basketball with making the experience fun for all participants.
  • BEHAVIOR: Demonstrate leadership, sportsmanship, and integrity
  • COMPETITIVENESS: Field teams that canbe competitive in AAU

Eligibility: Boys born on or after Sept 1, 1996 are eligible to play on the team, or if they will be in the fifth grade during the 2007-2008 season. Tryouts will be January 20th and 27th at McDougle Middle School Gym, from 6-8pm. Players will be selected by ability and potential. For more information or to register for tryouts, contact Brad Hemminger, 966-2998 or .

Practices: We will hold one two hour practice per week. Currently we practice Sunday evenings from 6-8pm. The spring season will run from the end of January to the second week of May.

Games/Tournaments: there are no “leagues” in AAU basketball. Teams participate in tournaments of their choice. We generally do two tournaments during the winter and 3-4 tournaments in the spring, as well as scrimmages against other local teams. We encourage players to play on Parks Rec teams to get the additional games and training.

Costs: Costs will be largely dependent on the cost of gym time, roster sizes and number of tournaments. We estimate the costs to be around $300 per season (plus purchase of home and away jerseys when joining club). Cost breakdown, not including jerseys is

  • Organizational registration fees to AAU/USSSA/YBOA for the club, players and coaches [7%]
  • Tournament registration fees for the tournaments we attend [25%]
  • Gym rental fees [55%]
  • Player equipment (e.g, t-shirts, bags the players get to keep) [10%]
  • Other miscellaneous (supplies, equipment, administration, etc.) [3%]
