Objective:

Expert Senior Network Engineer seeks to join service operations team responsible for maintaining a complex customer facing network with high-availability demands that the world can not live without.

With my superior knowledge of network routing protocols, routing and routers, I am able to quickly understand what the system is doing and bring order to chaos. Routers speak to me and I intuitively understand them.

I enjoy designing, implementing and supporting high-demand, high-availability, inter-related scalable systems. I continually educate myself and experiment with new solutions, technologies and out-of-the-box solutions to build a better network.

While my focus has shifted from Systems Administration to Network Engineering, I have continued to maintain my skills in UNIX administration and use that to take a unique approach to administration, combining both Systems Administration and Network Engineering to solve problems with a big picture understanding yet with the in-depth knowledge of each discipline.

Professional Experience

InteleNet Communications, Inc., Irvine, CA, February 2002 to Current

Regional Internet Service Provider/Data Center Hosting Provider

Senior Network Engineer

Supported InteleNet's entire regional network and acted as second level support for network issues the NOC was unable to resolve. As Senior Network Engineer, it was my responsibility to share my knowledge with my peers and oversee the general direction and evolution of the network and continually research new methods for doing things "better, faster, cheaper" without compromising the level of services customers have come to expect. I focused on maintaining high-availability, fault-tolerant network.

  • Responsible for maintaining and supporting InteleNet's network infrastructure, including network security and Internet connectivity.
  • Responsible for managing Internet connectivity costs across multiple providers with differing bandwidth commits and per Mbps costs while maintaining a high level of network performance.
  • Key person in developing new network infrastructure to support InteleNet's On-Demand computing platform based on an iSCSI SAN with managed firewalls and load balancers.
  • Developed documentation and training to educate peers and to assist NOC in supporting the network 24x7
  • Evaluated and recommended new hardware solutions and technologies.
  • Researched and recommended Internet providers based on InteleNet's connectivity requirements.
  • Deployed and managed IPv6 network, acquired ARIN-assigned v6 space.
  • Involved in day-to-day support and customer related trouble ticket resolution.
  • Worked with upstream Internet providers on problem resolutions.
  • Developed custom software solutions to aid in router/switch configuration management, automated ACL generation and router/switch monitoring.
  • Worked with Sales to design custom networking solutions for customers based on their needs and oversaw implementation.
  • Supported various Solaris, *BSD and Linux systems

Inktomi Corporation, Foster City, CA, December 2000 to October 2001

Internet Infrastructure Company

Jumbo Cluster Administrator

  • Maintained Inktomi’s search cluster nodes (2000+ hosts) in a 5 person group. A cluster contains about 100 servers along with various support nodes (jumpstart server, admin server, out-of-band console server).
  • Focused on maintaining scalable solutions that could be managed remotely by limited staff.
  • Developed knowledge on scaling and replicating processes and software releases over thousands of hosts.
  • Built support programs to ease administration and deployment to scale operation to large number of hosts.
  • Managed international web crawling and search clusters (clusters of 40-50 Sun Ultra2s and E220Rs running Solaris).

FirstWorld Communications (InteleNet Communications), Irvine, CA, 1999 to 2000.

Internet Service Provider/Managed Solutions Provider

Senior Systems/Network Administrator

Note: In July 1999, InteleNet Communications was acquired by Denver-based FirstWorld Communications.

  • Responsible for all network and Solaris systems in InteleNet’s Chicago data center and for in-house and infrastructure systems and networking in Irvine.
  • Responsible for maintaining WAN connectivity with five upstream providers and various routing policies.
  • Responsible for maintaining LAN routing (OSPF) and switching infrastructure.
  • Deployment of advanced customer solutions including load-balancing, backups, firewalls, monitoring and reporting tools.
  • Key person in developing FirstWorld’s Managed Services product line, including network/systems architecture for a new InternetDataCenter design.
  • Built experimental lab to test, and possibly deploy, emerging technologies such as IPv6 and 802.11b.
  • Managed three separate data centers, project lead on network and infrastructure build-out for two of them.
  • Designed and maintained sites for high profile e-commerce customers such as Toshiba (15-20 million hits) and Ty, Inc. (5-8 millions hits, ~15Mbps sustained traffic).
  • Maintained international network and firewalls for customers such as Unocal and Edison Mission Energy.

ThirdCoast Networks, Northbrook, IL, 1998 to 1999

Collocation / Web Hosting Company

Senior Systems/Network Administrator

Note: In November 1998, ThirdCoast Networks merged with Irvine-based InteleNet Communications.

Founded and helped establish and grow Third Coast Networks into a dominant web hosting/collocation provider in Chicagoland.
  • Oversaw all areas of networking and systems deployment, including monitoring and usage reporting, WAN connectivity and routing, streaming media, e-commerce and customer service.
  • Developed site designs for high profile customers such as Ty, Inc. (
  • Coordinated data center move and customer migrations.
  • Solely responsible for all routing (OSPF, BGP) and switching.

3Com Corporation, Santa Clara, CA, 1996 to 1998

Networking Hardware Manufacturer

Systems/Network Administrator

Supported 700 Solaris workstations and servers in the router engineering group.
  • Supported development process by running pre-release routing code on internal production routers. Worked with developers on bugs and various tests.
