A Report on

MATLAB APPLICATIONS: A One–Week workshop organized by ECE Department

At KLS’ Gogte Institute of Technology, Belagavi

During the odd Semester, Academic Year 2014-15

MATLAB is a tool used not only in various fields of engineering but also in research oriented areas like signal processing image processing, video processing.

Objective of the Workshop:

The main objective of the workshop was to empower students to use MATLAB not only as a tool but also in the different fields which they can work in and conduct projects in their fields of interest. The aim of the workshop was to provide an impulse to the students so they can bring their ideas forward and encourage them to think that will make them successful in life. The students will thus be able to put forth their ideas and implement them successfully that will motivate them to continuously move to a higher goal. The number of students was limited to a maximum of 60. A total of 57 students attended the workshop.

Workshop dates: 19th – 27th Jan 2015

Organizers: Prof. Aashish. A. Gadgil, Prof. B. R. Pandurangi, Prof. A. S. Awati

Resource Persons:

Prof. A. A. Gadgil; Prof. B. R. Pandurangi; Prof. A. S. Awati; Prof. G. S. Sudi; Prof. P. P. Patavardhan; Prof. S. M. Keshkamat; Prof. S. S. Saraf; Prof. Subrahmanya K N; Prof. P. U. Kalkundri

About the workshop:

The workshop was divided into two sections

i)Three day workshop for students of 3rd semester from 19th – 21st January 2015.

ii) A four day workshop for students of higher semester from 23rd – 27th January 2015.

The three day workshop for lower semester students focused on areas in which work can be done by them i.e. the subjects which they had studied. The workshop for higher semester students was organized from 23rd – 27th January 2015. Each day was divided into two separate sessions on related topics to make it easy for the students to cope up.

Day 1 began at 10.00am with a session on Introduction to MATLAB where the students were given a run through the basics. The afternoon session started with Signals & Systems and the students were shown how the signals can be represented in MATLAB digitally.

Day 2 began with Digital Signal Processing in which processing of signals was demonstrated keeping continuity in mind. In afternoon the students were introduced to Control Systems and shown how controlling of parameters can be done using MATLAB.

Day 3 began with the session on Image Processing in which students were shown how an image can be extracted in MATLAB. Different image manipulations techniques were also demonstrated. The afternoon session was about Simulink and Code Composer Studio in which the students were demonstrated how their ideas can be implemented graphically using a block diagram approach. C code generation was also shown. This session concluded with introduction to DSP Processor using CODE COMPOSER STUDIO where students learned the processing of signals as well as images on the actual processor kit.

Day 4 was a session organized especially for the PG students. In this session the students were introduced to ANN and Fuzzy Logic. Along with regular tutorials, interactive sessions and Hands-On training for all the modules was given throughout the workshop.

The workshop successfully concluded with valedictory function on 27th January 2015 after providing much needed rich information to the students.
