Mathematics Lead Teacher Teams

The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) Mathematics Lead Teacher Teams (K-8) will evaluate if our current units of study (CCLEs) achieve the goal of targeted work around the CCSS-M. Units of study will be further developed using the inquiry pathway of the gradual release of responsibility framework which shifts the responsibility for learning to students in a purposeful way. It is through this gradual release of responsibility that students become competent, independent learners who are college, career and community ready.

At the high school level, the work of the Lead Teacher Teams may look different from the K-8 work. This will be discussed in more detail with the Department Chairs.

The Math Leadership team will also evaluate, analyze, develop and pilot quarterly performance assessments to anchor our units of study and align to MMSD quarterly scope and sequence so that teachers have guidance and data on student performance based on the units of study.

Composition of Mathematics Lead Teacher Teams

MMSD Math Leadership Teams should each consist of K-8 educators who will work collaboratively with their school-based math focused IRT/Coach and each other throughout the year. IRTs/Coaches and teachers must seek permission from their administrator and complete the form and agreements that are found at the end of this document. The selection process will include elementary, middle and high teams, consisting of IRT & classroom.

Roles and Responsibilities of Mathematics Lead Teacher Teams

While all schools will be learning about the standards through the joint inquiry and implementation of the CCLEs in Year 2, MMSD Math Leadership Teams will be getting out ahead of the rest of the district, further developing the model units of instruction within the gradual release of responsibility framework. These units will be anchored by summative performance tasks, which will be developed by this team. The units will later be utilized district-wide.

Leadership Team Members must be willing to deeply analyze the structure and content of the CCSS. They must be leaders for the work within Priority Area I in the Strategic Framework

Coherent Instruction – Provide every student with well-rounded, culturally responsive and coherent instruction that leads to college, career and community readiness.
