Survey Question

How many years (to the nearest whole year) have you been teaching as a licensed teacher in MPS?

Write your answer on a post-it note, and place the post-it note on the line plot provided.

Session Goals

  • Examine Part III – Analyze Data
of the GAISE Framework for Statistical Problem Solving.
  • Discuss variability in statistical data.
  • Explore a measure of central tendency.

A Framework for
Statistical Problem Solving

GAISE Report (2007)

  1. Formulate Questions
  2. Collect Data
  3. Analyze Data
  4. Interpret Results

Directions

  1. Remove a card from the envelope.
  2. Read it to the table group.
  3. Use the cubes to model and solve the problem.
  4. Answer the questions as a table group.
  5. Pass the envelope, repeat with a new card.

Splitting a Check

Dr. McLeod took the math team to lunch, and then decided they should split the bill evenly. How much does each person pay?

Mary $8

Kevin $13

Karen $3

Lee Ann $5

Paige $7

Hank $0

Movie Coupons

A local movie theater gave out movie coupons to students. A group of children want to go as a group. How many movies can they each go to if they pool their coupons?

Sally’s Auto Body Shop

Sally’s Auto Body Shop has six employees. The employee’s salaries are listed below. If the budget is unchanged, but everyone earns the same amount, how much would each person earn?

Income

Employee 1 $30,000

Employee 2 $60,000

Employee 3 $20,000

Employee 4 $40,000

Employee 5 $40,000

Employee 6 $50,000

Weight Watchers Meeting

Seven people at a Weight Watchers meeting have lost an average of 6 pounds each since Jan 1. How much weight did each person lose?

Sally’s Business Plan

Sally’s business plan called for her to make an average profit of $50,000 per year, for her first five years. In her first three years, she made an average of $40,000 per year. What must she make in the last two years to meet her business plan?

Ritzy & Normal Counties

In Ritzy County, the average annual household income is $100,000. In neighboring Normal County, the average annual household income is $30,000. Sally thinks the average income of the two counties is $65,000.

Do you agree with Sally or not?

If so, explain why; if not, explain why not.

Ritzy & Normal Counties

What other information would you need in order to calculate the average annual household income in the two-county area?

Show how to calculate this average if you had this information.

Green Fields Golf 18th Hole

The math group went golfing as a way of celebrating the 5th year of the grant. Which team did better on this hole?

Big “Statistical” Ideas

  • Statistical data is inherently variable.
  • When analyzing data, we are interested in measures of central tendency, spread, and shape.
  • The mean is one measure of central tendency.
  • The mean can be thought of as leveling out or fair shares.
