Course Overview
Reviews whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, geometric formulas and signed numbers using lectures, self-paced computer assisted instruction, and manipulative activities.
Attendance
Attendance is mandatory. A student will be dropped for missing 4 times. Leaving early from a class without giving me any notice before-hand will count as an absence. If you intend on dropping the class, it is your responsibility to do so before the drop date. Do not expect the instructor to withdraw you from the course after the drop date.
Course Work
Instruction in this course is mainly done on the computer using a program called Mathzone. I will also be giving one-on-one instruction and small group instruction throughout the semester. There are six units to complete to finish this class which will give you six units of credit in the class.
Unit / Topic / Method of Passing / Credit1 / Whole Numbers / Unit 1 Test / .5 units
2 / Fractions / Unit 2 Test / .5 units
3 / Decimals / Unit 3 Test / .5 units
4 / Proportions/Percent / Unit 4 Test / .5 units
5 / Geometry / Unit 5 Test / .5 units
6 / Signed Numbers / Unit 6 Test/Final / .5 units
You will complete various assignments in preparation for these exams, which will include computer activities and textbook assignments. It may also include manipulatives, worksheets, and solo/group activities. These are assigned on an individual basis. All assignments and activities need to be signed off by me.
Exams
There will be six exams and a cumulative final. The exams will be based on the problems you did on Mathzone and homework problems in the book. You must take and pass each exam before moving on to the next unit. If you do not pass the exam the first time, you may retake it after some additional preparation. Once you complete an exam, you will receive .5 units of credit. You do not have to complete all six units in the current semester; you may enroll the following semester in N05 again in order to work on the class further. The following is a sample schedule to follow if you would like to complete N05 this fall.

Textbook Assignments
Problems will be assigned out of the textbook. Copy the problem from the book down and work it out. Then check your answer in the back of the book to see if you did it correctly. Correct any mistakes if it wasn’t right and if you do not understand the problem or your mistake ask me, a tutor, or another student to help you.
Worksheets/Activities/Manipulatives
You may be required to complete an additional activity on top of the computer and textbook assignments. These may include worksheets that provide additional practice and show real life examples of the math you are learning; a solo/group activity can be assigned to help you look at the math in a different way; manipulatives are anything that can serve as a math model that enables you to see the math more clearly.
Binder
You are required to keep a binder for this class. It should contain dividers that include (but not limited to) a section for textbook assignments, for computer assignments, for any additional worksheets or activities. It must be brought to class every day.

Student Resources:
- Students with verifiable disabilities who want to request academic accommodations are responsible for notifying their instructor and Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) as early as possible in the semester. To arrange for accommodations, contact DSPS by phone (714) 628-4863 or (714) 639-9742 (TTY) or stop by the DSPS center in E-107.
- The MaSH is a service provided by SCC that gives students a chance to supplement the learning done in the classroom. There will always be a math faculty member, Instructional aides, and student workers on duty to assist you when needed. There are also computers in the room on which students can access mathematical software or do work for their on-line math class. The MaSH is located in rooms U-78, 79, and 80 (entrance in U-80). Hours of operation for summer 2008 are Monday thru Thursday 10:30 am to 6:00 pm.
To use the MaSH, you must register for Math 098. This is a .2 unit class that will cost $4 (resident) for the entire semester. You can register for the MaSH when you register for classes or just go to admissions on the ground floor of the E building. Once registered, you can enter and exit the MaSH at any time during hours of operation. When you enter, you will slide your student ID card or just type in your student ID number at the MaSH sign in computer (no SSN). When you leave, you will sign out the same way. Signing out is very important. You may lose the hours you put in if you do not sign in and sign out appropriately.
Math 098 is a credit/no credit class. To receive credit for the class, you must complete 9 hours during the semester. We track this information through the sign in computer, so it is very important to sign in/out every time you use the MaSH.
If you have any questions please contact Scott Sakamoto at 628-4789 or Kathy Moore at 628-4923.
- Tutoring Center in room U-79 also offers math tutoring. The hours for this semester are:
M-TH 8:30am-8:30pm and F/S 9am-3pm
