MAT 150 - MATH CLASS FIRST WEEK CHECKLIST

The first week of the semester is typically busy for students since many classes are setting course rules and information. Here is a list of items that you will need to accomplish for the week. Don’t procrastinate, get these items done ASAP so that you are ready to start the semester and you understand where to find things and how to do things for the class. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

1. REVIEW -

This week is set aside for your own PERSONAL review. The pretest you took on Tuesday should give you an idea of what math skills you need to brush up on. Do the appropriate HW set section(s) and recall, relearn, remember, etc. your past algebra skills We will measure your readiness for the class by taking Quiz #1, Monday , Jan. 23rd. You should have a good idea by the end of this week if you are truly ready for this course. So get YOUR review started. If you struggle with the review this week, I strongly recommend you drop back to MAT 120/121/122.

2. PARTICIPATE IN CLASS –

Throughout the week I will try to demonstrate how the group work setting will work. We will do Ticket-Ins, Ticket-Outs, Think-Pair-Shares, Peer Editing, Case Study, Canvas, etc. throughout the week. You should get a feel if this class setting comfortable for you. If you do not feel comfortable, please move to another math class. Your first ticket-in is due Wed. Jan. 18th, at the beginning of class. Go to my webpage located at: web.gccaz.edu/~FRAFU39111 and find, print out, and bring the following items to class: Week 1 HW Set (Word), and Pretest Answer Key (PDF). These are the two types of file forms we will use throughout the semester. This will also help you practice how to find course material from my webpage.

3. GET FAMILIAR WITH CANVAS –

Canvas will serve as a place for outside class discussion/help. Your future canvas work will be your personal HW check each week. This week you should spend some time browsing through our course Canvas page and getting familiar with the discussion board. Once you log into Canvas, go to the class discussion board and write up an introduction about yourself. This introduction needs to be completed by Friday, Jan. 20th, 1:00 pm Arizona time, you will need to go to the Discussion Board and post your introduction. Please include the following expression within your introduction:

Failure to successfully meet this criteria and this deadline will result in a 0 for Quiz #1. You may still take the quiz to help gain an understanding if you are ready for MAT 150, but you will get a 0 in the grade book if your intro is not successfully completed by the deadline.

4. GET ACCESS TO THE BOOK –

Do this ASAP. The text can be purchased at the GCC bookstore. Or you may find a used copy on Amazon or Ebay. The Math Solution or GCC Library has copies you can loan out as well, but you can not take these home. Lastly, you can copy a classmates’ HW sets in the short term if you are having problems getting the text.
