Name: ______

Pulley Lab

Purpose: To discover whether pulleys change size, direction or distance of forces. To investigate what happens to mechanical advantage if more pulleys are added.

Hypothesis: Write an If…then…because statement about what will happen to Mechanical Advantage if more pulleys are used to lift a mass.

If ______,
then ______,

because ______.

Materials: Pulleys; Masses; Spring scales

Procedure:

  • Build the single fixed pulley according to the diagram given.
  • Test the input force needed to lift the output by checking the spring scale as the load is lifted off 10 cm off the lab table.
  • Repeat the process for all other pulleys on the data table.
  • Take notice of how much string you must pull to get the output 10 cm off of the table

Draw a neat picture of an everyday object that shows how pulleys change the direction of the force put into them. Make sure to label the input and output forces in your picture.
