Classroom expectations:

  • Preparedness: Come prepared with required materials and homework. Come prepared ready to learn with a positive attitude.
  • Punctuality:
  • It is expected that you will findassigned seat, take out necessary supplies, and start warm-up activityas soon as you enter my classroom.
  • Respect: Be respectful of yourself, peers, teacher, and property. All students are responsible for conducting themselves in a safe manner. Bullying will not be tolerated!
  • Grading: A combination of evidence from class work, class discussion, teacher observation, warm-ups, quizzes, homework, and assessments will be used to determine mastery for each learning target. Please refer to SMS course fact sheet for more specific information regarding grading.
  • Responsibility: Students who are absent are responsible for timely completion of assignments missed as a result of absence. Classwork and homework are updated DAILY. After consulting the homework page as well as a peer about work missed, ask Mrs. McMaster if there is anything additional that you need to complete. Missed paperwork will be in the absent file.

  • Reading Requirement: You are required to have a free read book with you daily. The expectation is that you will read independently at home for a MINIMUM of 12-15 pages each day. There will be regularly assigned reading projects. Typically, there will be two independent reading projects per marking period.
  • Course Content:

Students will explore three major Research Lab units of study through this reading course.

  • Genre Study – Realistic Contemporary Fiction (August – November)
  • Environmental Studies (December – February)
  • Medieval Civilizations (March-June)

Students will participate in bi-weekly vocabulary practice.
