Masters Degree in Health Research

Penang Medical College (PMC), Malaysia is delighted to invite applications for the second intake of the Master of Science degree, in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), in Health Research, N/720/7/0051 (PA 4091)01/19. This two year postgraduate degree is aimed at medical, health and social science graduates with an interest in health research. It is a fully accredited degree of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the National University of Ireland (NUI) with approval of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and Ministry of Higher Education. Students graduating with an MSc in Health Research are awarded an internationally recognised qualification of the RCSI and NUI.

Course Information

This innovative two year programme, delivered by the Department of Public Health at PMC, is tailored to the career development needs of allied healthprofessionals in Malaysia and countries around the region. Course teaching is designed to facilitate people working in the health service, adopting a blended learning approach, including weekend teaching and distance learning.

Programme Delivery:

The programme comprises of six core modules followed by a research dissertation delivered by expert academics and researchers from Ireland and Malaysia.Modules are taught over three 12 week blocks. 2 modules will be completed each semester (1 semester = 12 weeks):

The course is designed to facilitate students who are working full-time. The research component includes hands-on workshops and designated times for direct interaction with research supervisors.

Students are required to attend 6 compulsory classes over the weekends within the first 3 semesters.

Entry Requirements

Candidates are required to hold a bachelor’s degree (Hons) with a minimum CGPA of 2.50[1] or a medical degree recognised by the Irish or Malaysian Medical Councils. Where there is over-subscription to the programme, admission will be based on a consideration of academic record and professional qualifications and applicants may be invited for a personal interview, at the discretion of the Programme Directors.

The programme is delivered by excellently rated, fully qualified staff and meets the standards set by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Other full-time and part-time facultywith appropriate experience from Ireland and Malaysia will contribute.

Registration

Students are jointly registered with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Penang Medical College.

Virtual Learning Environment

Students will have access to a virtual learning environment for course content and assessment.

Assessment

A variety of summative and formative assessment methods will be used in each module to evaluate student learning of the defined learning outcomes.

Library resources

Students will have online access to an extensive range of journal collections through the RCSI and PMC libraries.

Qualification:

Graduates are awarded aMaster of Science of the RCSI and National University of Ireland (NUI). This is a level 9 award on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) in Ireland and is compliant with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

Post graduate diploma and post graduate certificate levels of the course is also offered for those interested for a shorter programme of study.

Graduation:

The graduation ceremony is held in June, on successful completion of year two.
