Sites identified with an asterisk * allow practicum students to conduct a large proportion of practicum activities after 4:30 P.M. and on weekends.

Brief Description / Bo’s Place provides support to children and their families who have experienced the death of a parent or sibling. It is the only ongoing program for grieving children and families in the Greater Houston Area.

Services Offered / Children and family grief support groups, community education and training, information and referral service.
Additional Information / This center often runs children and family grief support groups during the day and traumatic loss groups during the evening. The groups are run by volunteers and overseen by a licensed staff member.
Trainees must commit to work at Bo’s Place for a calendar year. Therefore, students need to continue to volunteer at Bo’s place for a couple of months after completing the two semesters of practicum.

Brief Description / The mission of Communities In Schools Houston (CIS) is to provide and to coordinate student assistance services at the school campus in order to best meet the physical and emotional needs of at-risk students and to empower these students to remain in school.
- Is a non-profit program that has been successfully providing social services to children in Houston’s schools since 1979
- Works directly in the schools, with 104 programs in four Houston-area school districts (Houston, Alief, Spring Branch and FortBend); CIS has an office on each campus, staffed by a project manager
- Serves children deemed at-risk for dropping out of school. They come from homes of extreme poverty, many live with single parents and guardians, or in foster homes

Brief Description / Depelchin is a United Way agency that provides a range of services to children and families. Most clients are low to middle SES. Services include: Foster Care, Adoption, Post-adoption, Residential Treatment, and Counseling.

Site Information / Practicum students provide services in the Counseling Dept. which include home and office-based components. Client issues range from truancy, family conflict, ADHD assessment, Anxiety, Depression, Child Abuse and Neglect History, Learning Disabilities, Bereavement, Divorce and “Complex PTSD”.
It is highly recommended to have completed the courses Family Counseling and Counseling Children before starting practicum in this site.
Site seeks students who have had some field experiences in schools or community agencies.

Brief Description / HAWC provides shelter and support services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence including men, women, and children. Practicum students work under the supervision of a licensed counselor to provide therapeutic interventions in individual and group settings.

Additional Information / Most services at HAWC are provided by volunteers. Before trainees start seeing clients they must complete direct services training on domestic and sexual violence. The Hotline and Counseling Training involves 50 classroom hours offered at night and on Saturdays for four (4) weeks. Once the classroom portion of the training is completed, 24 hours of additional training are required on HAWC’s hotlines.

Fulfill all prerequisites as outlined by the Educational Psychology Counseling program at UH, including completion of a course in Psychopathology

Maintain professionalism and honor the ethical guidelines of the profession (e.g., ACA and/or APA)

Brief Description / The Women's Home is a long-term residential rehabilitation facility for women in crisis. Women are referred by hospitals, drug treatment centers, and social service agencies for issues such as family abuse, addiction, and emotional illness. The women typically stay at the Women's Home for approximately 10 months.
