“Masking” your Identity

Preface:

We will be examining different aspects of identity while we read The Outsiders, The House on Mango Street, and The Book Thief. We will begin with The Outsiders and two essential questions of the unit: Why might some people hide their true selves? What is more important – individuality or social acceptance? We will consider what experience can teach you about who you are.

For this project, you will be exploring “who” you are through a social psychological lens. Specifically, you will examine how culture, community, and your experiences affect “who” you are and “who” you are perceived to be by others.

The Mask:

  • Everyone will design and then create a mask. Design a mask that reflects you.
  • Masks must be constructed with at least two different mediums. Bring appropriate supplies to school. (ex. collage, magazine/newspaper clippings, beads, feathers, foam/felt shapes, etc.) I have small foam letters, feathers, flowers and sports symbols, crown shapes, magazines for words and photos, and I will supply a paper mask. You will design your mask on paper (with the outline of the actual mask) first. We will begin mask work on Thursday in class. Masks are due on Thursday, August 17, 2017.

Outer Mask:

The outer side of the mask should reflect how you think others perceive you. Think about words, phrases, and other representations that symbolize who others perceive you to be. Pictures and/or drawings are acceptable as well.

Requirements (Outer Mask):

  • 5+ adjectives (strengths/weaknesses)
  • 2+ inspirational quotes
  • 3+ symbols

Inner Mask:

The inner part of the mask should reflect how you see yourself. Once again, think about words, phrases, and other representations that symbolize who you are. Place these items on the inside of your mask.

Requirements (Inner Mask):

  • 5+ adjectives (strengths/weaknesses)
  • 2+ inspirational quotes
  • 3+ symbols
  • This project has a writing component. Additional directions attached. Please use complete sentences. Design your mask with thought and explain each element of your mask. If you use elements not mentioned on the attached list, include them. For example, if you use specific colors on your mask, explain why the use of those colors helps explain your identity. If you need additional space, please attach binder paper. You will be graded on thoughtfulness, thoroughness, effort, and neatness.
