Winner of SWHAP Achievement Award 2012

The Board of the Swedish Workplace HIV and AIDS Programme (SWHAP) is proud to announce the winner of the SWHAP Achievement Award 2012 in the category for best progress. The award goes toTigo Rwanda in recognition of the remarkable progress the company has made in its workplace programme during a very short period of time.

Tigo Rwandalaunched their HIV/AIDS Policy and Programme during September 2011 and thanks to the dedication and huge efforts by the HIV/AIDS committee, management and workers, an impressive workplace programme was in place within a year. The programme at Tigohas included management sensitisation, training of the Steering committee, policy formulation,abaseline survey, awareness-raising for employees, training of Peer Educators and voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) for HIV. The programme and policy was jointly developed by the management and employees represented in the company’s HIV committee. It is notable that the launch of the programme attracted local media attention and generated interestinthe SWHAP initiative within the country.

The Tigoprogramme has in a short period set an example to many other Tigo branches in different countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with Tanzania preparing to start a SWHAP workplace programme borrowing from the Rwandan example.Tigois focused on widening their scope to reach a lot more workers under the supply chain as well as utilisetheir core-competencies to spread awareness at the community level.

The Board congratulates Tigo Rwanda for the progress it has made and for undertaking a systematic and structured approach in the implementation of the programme. The Board feels that it is evident that over timeTigowill achieve a comprehensive and sustainable workplace programme and it is, therefore, a worthy winner of SWHAP Best Progress Award for 2012.

The SWHAP Achievement Award has been given out since 2008. In 2012 the four categories for the award are Most Comprehensive Workplace Programme; Best Progress in Workplace Programming; Peer Educator Achievement Award; and Most Innovative Intervention. The assessment for the Best Progress category was carried out through an extensive self-assessment questionnaire comprising 17 questions and 68 benchmarks followed by thorough review by the SWHAP team.
