COURSE DESCRIPTION

The ultimate goal of Physical Education is to improve students’ quality of life through the promotion of life long health enhancing physical activity. Students will learn how to control weight, strengthen the heart, strengthen the body, relieve stress, avoid disease, improve self confidence and improve overall quality and outlook on life. The course of study concentrates on lifetime fitness and physical activity through the following content areas:

Fitness Circuits, Football/Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee/Handball, Lacrosse, Volleyball, Badminton, Floor Hockey, Basketball, Tennis/Pickleball, Golf/Softball

GRADING

·  Preparation – 30%

5 points awarded daily. Must be completely changed, no partial credit awarded.

·  Class Participation – 40%

5 points awarded daily. An additional 25 points awarded on Fitness Days.

·  Skill / Written Tests – 30%

CLASS EXPECTATIONS

·  Respect yourself and others – show good sportsmanship

·  Students will show 100% effort during class

·  Foul language will not be tolerated.

·  No gum chewing is allowed in class and no food or drink is to be consumed in the gym.

·  Students will remain in the gym until the dismissal bell rings.

·  Cell phones are not permitted in class or in the locker rooms.

·  Must change completely before and after class

FITNESS DAY MAKE UPS

Eligible students are permitted to make up fitness days. Students that are considered eligible are those that are absent from school or have a doctor note or parent note excusing them from class that day. Student athletes are also eligible to make up the fitness day if the fitness day falls on the day of a competition.

All make ups must be completed prior to the last week of the marking period. If students are unable to make up the fitness day within the required timeline, a zero will remain as the final grade. There will be no exceptions. It is in the students’ best interest to make up the fitness day as soon as possible.

Eligible students are required to make up the fitness days (runs, circuits, etc.) before or after school. Fitness days will be made up by completing a 2000-meter row within a required time.

Make up Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7:00 – 7:30 am and 2:40 – 3:10 pm.

Students are required to schedule a time for the make up in advance.

EXCUSES

·  Parent Note – Accepted if a student is ill or injured for only one class period.

·  Doctor Note – Required for an illness or injury that lasts 2 or more consecutive class periods. A doctor MUST include the start and end dates for the restricted activity.

LOCKER ROOM AND GYM SECURITY

·  Students will be assigned a locker in the locker room. Please obtain a lock and keep your belongings locked inside the locker at all times.

·  The school is not responsible for students’ personal belongings. All belongings must be locked in students’ lockers!

DRESS

ALL PE UNIFORMS ARE TO BE BOUGHT DIRECTLY FROM KAMPUS KLOTHES.

Students MAY NOT buy any uniforms in school.

·  Students will have 5 minutes to dress from the time that the late bell rings before being considered tardy.

·  A complete change of athletic clothing must be worn. Students must wear the following during physical education class:

o  PE T-shirt (with name written on back)

o  Shorts or sweatpants (no jeans)

o  Socks and sneakers (with non-marking soles)

·  No school clothes should be worn over or under physical education clothes.

·  For safety reasons no jewelry is permitted in class.

·  Learning to exercise in a variety of weather conditions is a part of the curriculum; it is the student’s responsibility to dress appropriately for the weather during outside activities.

·  For hygiene reasons, students must change back into school clothes for the remainder of the day.
