MAPPING NEW LANDS

When this country was first discovered, the explorers sailed into the bay in the middle of the southern shore. A bay is a sheltered part of the sea formed by a curve in the shore. Locate and label the bay.

They took off exploring and discovered that a mountain range ran right through the middle of the country from the north to the south. A mountain is land that is much higher than its surroundings. It is larger than a hill. A mountain range has mountains organized in groups named a range. Draw and label your mountain range.

Aridge is the long area of high ground at the top of a mountain range.Draw and label the ridge on your mountain range.

When the explorers climbed down the mountain range on the western side they climbed down into a valley. A valley is low land that lies between mountains and usually has a river flowing through it. At the northern end of the valley they found a lake. A lake is a large area of water surrounded by land. Draw the lake at the northern end of the valley and label it.

At the southern end of the lake there was a gorge. A gorge is a narrow valley with steep rocky walls.Draw and label the gorge.

When the lake was full, the extra water ran over the gorge as a waterfall. Draw and label the waterfall.

The water from the waterfall created a river that ran the rest of the way down to the ocean. When a river meanders it means that there are loops in the river caused by the water running fast through the land. Draw the river meandering down to the ocean.

Having reached the ocean again, the explorers sailed around to the bay. They decided to explore the western side of the country. Not far inland, and to the west of the mountain range, they found a plateau. A plateau is a large area of flat land that is higher than the land around it. Draw and label a plateau.

To the west of the plateau they discovered a volcano. A volcano is a mountain with a crater at the top that throws out molten rock, steam and ash when active. Draw and label a volcano.

All of the area to the east of the mountains and north of the plateau and volcano was a desert. A desert is a dry area, with very little plant life, covered in sand. Draw and label the desert.

At the far north east corner of the desert they discovered a monolith. A monolith is a single huge rock or stone such as Uluru. Draw and label the monolith.

On return to the bay they decided to explore the waters of the ocean near the country. Just outside of the day they found an island. An island is a piece of land completely surrounded by water. Draw and label the island.

As they sailed further south. They discovered a reef. A reef is a ridge of rocks, coral or sand. Draw and label the reef.

Just to the east of the reef they found an atoll. An atoll is a coral reef in the shape of a ring or horseshoe that encloses a lagoon, a shallow area of water.

MAPPING THE SETTLEMENTS

We want you to imagine why people settled in, and developed this country.

People first settled here because the land around the bay was green, could grow nearly anything, and had easy access to ships coming with the goods that they needed. Along part of the bay, theyneededwarehouses to store the goods that came off the ships.

For the first year or so, the explorers and the other settlers that came to the country stayed fairly close to the Bay and built their lifestyle there. Draw and label anything else that you might find located around the Bay. (Your drawings do not have to be to scale.)

People who lived around the bay, started to explore the land when they were having holidays. The land either side of the river was beautiful and many families enjoyed their holidays there. Draw and label any services and buildings that might have started to exist along the riverbanks and between the river and the bay.

Some of the people who lived by the Bay were winemakers in the old country. They started looking for land on which they could grow the grapes to make wine. On the side of the mountain range they found the perfect land. Individual families owned large amounts of land on the side of the mountain for vineyards. Having made the wine they needed to get it back to the city around the Bay and the holiday destinations along the river. What was needed for them to get it there? Draw and label your ideas.

Whilst the desert was very unforgiving land, the people of the country began to believe that the monolith had special, sacred significance to the land. Many people wanted to visit the monolith to gain a sense of the spirituality that existed there. What might have developed over the years between the Bay and the monolith in order to support this constant passage of people. Draw and label your ideas.
