Instructions for use:

1. Print the Map Skills Printable

2. Fold the paper in half, vertically. This will make it so that the vocabulary word is on one side of the flash card and the definition will be on the opposite side.

3. Cut out the flash cards.

4. Laminate the cards for durability.

5. Start learning- Have fun!

MAP / A map is a drawing of a place from above, and maps show were things are located.
CARDINAL DIRECTIONS / Cardinal directions are the four main directions: North, South, East, and West
INTERMEDIATE DIRECTIONS / The four intermediate directions are: Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest
COMPASS ROSE / A compass rose is a map symbol that shows directions (north, south, east, west)
MAPKEY/LEGEND / A map key or legend is a list of symbols on a map and the map key explains what each symbol stands for.
MAP SYMBOL / A map symbol is a drawing that stands for something real. For example, a drawing of a plane might stand for the location of an airport.
DISTANCE / Distance tells us how far one location is from another.
MAP SCALE / A map scale is a way to measure distance on a map. It is similar to a ruler and tells us what measurement equals what distance.
BORDER / A border is a dividing line between two places on a map.
MAP GRID / A map grid is a pattern of lines that forms squares. Each square on a map is represented by a letter and a number. A map grid helps you to find places on a map.
LANDFORM / A landform is a natural feature on the Earth's surface.
MOUNTAIN / A mountain is a large, steep hill.
ISLAND / An island is a piece of land surrounded by water on all sides.
PENINSULA / A peninsula is a piece of land surrounded by water on three sides.
VOLCANO / A volcano is a mountain that has an opening through which lava, gas, and ash can erupt.
DESERT / A desert is a dry and often sandy area of little rainfall, extreme temperatures, and sparse vegetation.
PLAIN / A plain is a large, flat area of land with grasses and few trees.
CANYON / A canyon is a deep valley with steep, rocky sides.
VALLEY / A valley is a low-lying area between hills or mountains.
OCEAN / An ocean is a large body of salt water. Historically, there are four oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Artic. However, the Southern/Antarctic Ocean is the newest ocean.
RIVER / A river is a long, wide stream of water that flows across land into another body of water.
LAKE / A lake is a large body of water with land all around it. Lakes can be freshwater or saltwater.
CONTINENT / A continent is a large area of land. There are seven continents: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.
GLOBE / A globe is a round, 3D model of the Earth which depicts the continents and oceans.
CARTOGRAPHY / Cartography is the science of drawing maps.
CARTOGRAPHER / A cartographer is a map maker.
EQUATOR / The equator is an imaginary line drawn around the Earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°
PRIME MERIDIEN / The prime meridian is the Earth's zero of longitude, which by convention passes through Greenwich, England.
LONGITUDE / Longitudes, also known as meridians, are vertical lines on the globe. They meet at the poles and are widest at the Earth's equator.
LATITUDE / Latitudes are horizontal lines on the globe, also known as parallels. They are at equal distances from each other and never meet.
