MANSOURA-MANCHESTER PROGRAMME FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION

The Mansoura-Manchester problem based programme is different from the current subject based format used by MansouraMedicalSchool and all other medical schools in Egypt except Suez CanalUniversity. The main differences are:

Students will learn through medical problems from year one. The problem will highlight certain inter-related topics that can include subjects from both pre-clinical sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Histology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Parasitology and Pharmacology) as well as Clinical sciences (Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Forensic Medicine and Community Medicine). There is not such division of topics into single field.

The programme is dependent upon the students (student -centred) in a sense that students will learn from different sources like internet, periodicals, library, from one another and lastly from tutors and teachers. Electronic (e)-Learning is an integral part of the programme and students should be computer competent and preferably have their own laptop.

The programme will run for 6 years, exactly as the ordinary programme. However, each year is divided into 2 semesters. Each semester consists of 12-14 weeks of study plus 2 weeks for exams.

Semester1 runs from Late September to early January.

Semester 2 runs from early February to late June.

Summer exams for unsuccessful students will be held in late July/early August.

How to apply for the programme?

Egyptian students must be accepted by MansouraFaculty of Medicine or transferred to it by the National Office (for equivalent degrees) according to the national scoring and distribution of the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education. Applications are made to the dean of the medical Faculty in Mansoura.

Foreign students should apply through the Embassy of their country in Egypt. The Waffedin office ofMansouraUniversity now deals with their application to cut short the application process through the national office.

Tuition and bench fees (inclusive):

Egyptian students: 20000 Egyptian pounds/academic year.

Foreign students: 4000 sterling pounds for year one (two semesters).

: 3000 sterling pounds per academic year thereafter.

The curriculum is divided into 3 phases:

Phase 1 (years 1 &2): Mainly Pre-clinical sciences (about 20% clinical) and is conducted at the Medical school (4th floor).

Phase 2 (years 3 &4): Half-Clinical half-basic sciences and is conducted at both the medical school and the Medical Centres of Mansoura University.

Phase 3 (years 5 &6): Clinical sciences and is conducted at Medical Centres of Mansoura University.

Students wishing to move to the ordinary subject based programme of Mansoura or any other medical school in Egypt at any year, have to balance what they had studied with what ordinary students had studied and complete any missing topics.

Students wishing to move from the conventional subject based program to Manchester program can transfer within 8 weeks of the start of semester one. Students wishing to transfer after the midyear exam must pass that exam by 60% in all subjects. After the first year, they must pass the final exam with an overall score of Good (65% or more). All students have to start from semester one.

The curriculum

The curriculumis“designed as a spiral with horizontal integration that in Phase 1 forms a biomedical, clinical and behavioural science base, which is then revisited and expanded in Phases 2 and 3 from a clinical perspective.

Year 1: Semester 1,

The Foundation Semester which is designed to attract Widening Participation from students to the programme, and highlighted the importance of the correct approach to learning basic science subjects.

Year 1: Semester 2: Life cycle

Year 2: Semester 1:Cardio-respiratory fitness.

Year 2: Semester 2:Mind and movement.

Year 3 Semester 1: Nutrition,metabolism and excretion.

Year 3 Semester 2: Heart, lungs and blood.

Then3 years for clinical sciences in the form of 8-week rotation at each of Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, General and special Medicine, General and special Surgery as well as Community Medicine and Accident and Emergency .

The foundation semester (14 weeks) includes:

Course units using problem-based learning concepts.

These include: cell biology, microbes and infection, organs and systems, genes and heredity.

First week, meet the expert and introduction to PBL.Aim is to explain enquires regarding PBL.

Weeks 2-12: a classical week consists of:

Problem Based Learning sessions: 2-3 times/week.
