Thank you for choosing Manderley Cottage for your Maine vacation. We know you will enjoy your visit and hope that you will return to enjoy the Oceanside hospitality of Manderley. This home was built in 1963 on what was formerly a gravel pit, as well as the site of a popular fresh water spring. The water here is crystal clear, and the aquifer is said to originate from the melting snows of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire (visible from elevated points on Bailey Island). Please be mindful that all the water on this island is provided by individual wells, and while the water supply is adequate, the demands during peak summer day can be heavy. (The hot water runs very hot, so be aware) Clean folded bed linen has been placed on each bed. It would be helpful if you could place your bed linens on the floor of the laundry room on the check-out morning.
The disposal of trash on Bailey Island involves a couple of extra steps, so here are some helpful hints. We have provided a compost area directly behind the stone garden area, and a kitchen compost bucket under the sink for fruit and vegetable peelings, egg shells and cardboard egg cartons, coffee grounds and non-meat kitchen waste. Simply empty the bucket in the compost area, and it will decompose and be used to feed the flower garden. If you have a lobster feed- discard the sells over the sea wall at low tide. The tides and the seagulls will return them to nature. Please remove the rubber bands first. You will have quite a show when the seagulls arrive to feast.
The recycling center is nearby on Mountain Road on Great Island.
Enjoy your stay and have fun!
