DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM

DEH 1002C INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL PROCEDURES

Course Description: (Credit 6: 2 class hours per week and 12 laboratory hours). Co requisites: DES 1010, DES 1200C. This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge of the basic principles of instrumentation, instrument design and their use, and the fundament skills necessary to provide comprehensive dental hygiene service. Additional special fees are required. (Fall)

Performance Standards:

Upon satisfactory completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Explain the theory of disease transmission and infection control.

2. Describe the utilization of personal barriers and the protocol routinely used to ensure protection against exposure to blood borne infectious diseases.

3.  Discuss and/or demonstrate the use of standard precautions during the dental hygiene appointment.

4.  Discuss AIDS in relations to history, symptoms, epidemiology, infection control and prevention, ethical and legal issues and current research.

5.  Compare and contrast and/or demonstrate the methods of sterilization and disinfection.

6.  Discuss and/or demonstrate the proper utilization and maintenance of dental equipment.

7.  Describe the proper procedure for taking and recording vital signs.

8.  Describe the principles of optimum patient, operator and equipment positioning.

9.  Describe the proper method and sequence of completing the extra and intraoral examination.

10.  Describe the principles of instrumentation, including design adaptation, and activation for all instruments: mirror, explorer, periodontal probe, sickle scaler, universal scalers, area specific instruments.

11.  Describe the composition, method of attachment and role of hard deposits and stains in the oral cavity.

12.  Describe the components of the gingival and periodontal assessment.

13.  Describe common conditions of the teeth including caries, attrition, abrasion, and erosion.

14.  Describe carious lesions using the G.V. Black classification System.

15.  Describe the technique and explain the role of external stain removal.

16.  Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the three different types of fluoride available for professional application (NaF, SnF2, APF) and the procedure for application, and fluoride varnish.

17.  Discuss the utilization of systemic and topical fluoride for dental patient including mode of delivery, mode of action and patient needs.

18.  Describe and identify cause, characteristics and population group for common oral lesions.
