MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK

Camp Dates:

Water Wonders (7th grade) June 8-12 Monday – Friday

Explorers (8th grade) June 22 – 26 Monday - Friday

Hot Shots (6th grade) July 7-10 Tuesday - Friday

Location: Students will meet each morning at BCMS and travel to Mammoth Cave National Park.

Times:

For Camp: Meet at Barren County Middle School (BCMS) at 7:00 am each morning. Students should be picked up at BCMS at 4:00 pm each evening.

For Closing Ceremony: See Closing Ceremony information on additional handout.

Meals: A sack lunch will be provided by BCMS each day. You may pack your own lunch, but if you do, please notify BCMS so they do not prepare a lunch for you.

Shoes: Lace-up shoes (tennis shoes or hiking boots) are required each day of camp.

What to wear:

Wear each day:

1.  Clothes suitable for summer weather. These clothes will probably get DIRTY, so DO NOT wear anything valuable!

2.  Lace-up tennis shoes or hiking boots— NO sandals, flip flops, or “Crocs”

What to bring:

Bring each day: Small Backpack with:

Sunscreen

Insect repellant

Reusable water bottle

Rain gear

Extra pair of shoes and socks (these should be items that can get dirty and wet)

Extra set of clothing (sometimes you may get muddy or wet and will want these)

What NOT to bring:

·  music/video/game players, cell phones, etc.

·  valuable items

·  money

Conduct: We know that BCMS students understand that outstanding behavior is expected of them at all times. However, if there are any behavior problems, the student’s parents will be contacted and the student will be asked to leave camp.

Photo Permission: Please fill out and return the “National Park Service Release Form” so we can use camp photos on our website and in other publications. We want to show the world what a great time we are going to have!

Additional information

What ELSE to bring/wear:

o  on Monday: extra clothes and shoes because you will get wet

o  on Tuesday: jacket/sweatshirt for going into the cave

o  on Wednesday: bring school appropriate swimwear and towel or extra set of clothes

o  on Thursday: jacket/sweatshirt for going into the cave

o  on Friday: jacket/sweatshirt for going into the cave

** (Remember to have your insect repellant and rain gear each day!)

Family Day & Closing Ceremony - Friday, June 12th:

Families of the campers are invited to the Family Day activities and the Water Wonders Camp Closing Ceremony to be held on Friday, June 12th.

All activities will start at the Enclosed Picnic Shelter in the picnic area at Mammoth Cave National Park.

Family Day will begin at 11:45 am. We will be going into the cave so please be prompt.

The Closing Ceremony will begin at 2:30 pm.

The Closing Ceremony should conclude by 3:00pm.

Parents should plan to pick up their children at 3:00 pm at Mammoth Cave National Park’s Enclosed Picnic Shelter.

If parents are unable to attend the closing ceremony, BCMS will transport students back to the school by approximately 4:00 pm.

Additional information

Hair (Yes, hair):

During camp, we will be doing demonstrations and experiments with open flames. For safety reasons, students with long hair will be required to pull it back and fasten it behind their heads. We will provide safety goggles.

Closing Ceremony – Friday, July 10, 2015:

Families of the campers are invited to the Hot Shots Camp Closing Ceremony to be held on Friday, July 10, 2015.

All activities will start in the enclosed shelter at the picnic area at Mammoth Cave National Park.

The Closing Ceremony will begin at 2:00 pm.

The Closing Ceremony should conclude by 3:00 pm.

Parents should plan to pick up their children at 3:00 pm at Mammoth Cave National Park’s Enclosed Picnic Shelter.

If parents are unable to attend the closing ceremony, BCMS will transport students back to the school at the regular time.

EXPLORERS

o  on Tuesday: hiking clothes (we will be going off-trail, so long sleeve shirt for briars is good)

o  on Wednesday: tank and thin shorts for under coveralls, over the ankle lace-up boots

o  on Thursday: jacket/sweatshirt for going into the cave

o  on Friday: tank and thin shorts for under coveralls, over the ankle lace-up boots
