Course Description:

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Algebra 2 CP or Algebra 2 H, and teacher recommendation, or approval of principal/director. Pre-calculus is a program of mathematical studies focusing on the development of the student’s ability to understand and apply the study of functions and advanced mathematics concepts to solve problems. The course will include an in-depth study of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Other topics studied are conic sections and polar curves. Emphasis is placed on active participation through modeling, technology, group activities, and communication in mathematics.

Students are expected to use technology, including graphing calculators, computers, and data-gathering equipment throughout the course. Graphing calculators should be an integral part of all instruction.

Honors pre-calculus is a pre-requisite for Advanced Placement calculus.

Instructional Philosophy:

I believe that ALL students can learn at a high level if they are taught with a variety of instructional strategies. It is the goal of this course to not only build students’ math skills, but also to build their confidence as math learners. In order to achieve these objectives, students will be expected to work individually and in groups and with technological resources to maximize their achievement. Students will have to demonstrate through traditional tests, quizzes, projects, an interactive classroom notebook, and participation in the classroom that they have developed the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the standards of a Pre-Calculus Honors course.

Distribution of quarterly grading components Quarter 1

* Tests, Quizzes, & Major Projects / 65%
* Classroom Binder (notes, reflections, revisions, etc) / 15%
*Homework
Assignments that must be completed outside of class ,which will reinforce content knowledge and skills; most often completed in notebooks. / 10%
* Quarterly Exam / 10%

Classroom Expectations

1. Be on time or be early.

2. Walk in with a positive attitude. This is a CAN'T FREE ZONE. Remember, YES YOU CAN.

3. Come prepared with all materials (Binder, Pencil, Calculator, and Homework). You will not be allowed to go to your locker during the class period to get any forgotten materials.

4. A TI-83 or TI-84 is required if you are an Honors student. A cell phone cannot be used as a calculator.

5. Raise your hand before speaking. It gives everyone an equal chance to participate.

6. I am available Tuesday-Thursday after school until 3:30. If you need help do not wait until the last minute.

Classroom Procedures

1. When you enter class you will start the Do Now, which will be on the board, and take out your homework.

2. You have 5-10 minutes to complete the Do Now. It will always be a review of the previous day's lesson or homework assignment.

3. Once your Do Now is complete you will hand it in to be graded so I know you understood the previous day's material and grab the classwork assignment on my desk.

4. Binders must be organized in chronological order (notes, classwork, and homework for each lesson)

5. Every student must complete a table of contents. Table of contents will include unit and lesson number, lesson topic, and homework assignment.

6. Homework must be labeled with unit #, lesson #, page #, and problem #. All work must be shown and final answer must be circled in order to get full credit.

7. All homework should be done in left column (in pencil), at the beginning of class and on your own time revisions will be done in the right column (in pen or a different color).

8. Homework is graded on a 0-2 scale:

·  0 - Homework is not complete

·  1- Homework is started with very little effort. Many problems were skipped or no work was shown.

·  2- Homework is complete. All work is shown and final answer is circled.

·  Revisions count toward the binder check because they will have to be completed after the assigned due date. No late homework is accepted unless you have an excused absence. Homework will be checked at the start of every class during the Do Now.

9. Quizzes and tests for each unit will be at the end of the binder after a divider. You must save all your quizzes and test so you will have them to study for your midterm and final

10. The binder is collected during the last week of each quarter.

Absences

Upon return from an excused absence, one week will be allowed for make-up work.

I will be available after school to help you with anything you need. Students whose absences are unexcused will have no make-up eligibility. Please remember that it is the student’s responsibility to determine what has been missed, and complete any make-up work. All grades will be posted on the X2 gradebook for you and your guardian to check. All classwork assignments will be posted on the wikispace site given under class website.

Make-Up Work (for unsatisfactory grades):

Only quiz and test corrections can be completed if you want to improve your grades. There will be no retakes for quizzes or exams because by the date of the test or quiz your misconceptions should be corrected and the material should be mastered. In order to gain 1/3 of your total points lost, you must do corrections after school using the correct graphic organizer. Once I review the student's corrections, he or she may gain the appropriate points back toward his or her quiz or exam.Students can complete corrections on any quiz until the day of the Unit Exam. Exam corrections must be completed within one week of the day the exam was handed back.
