MAKING SPACE PROGRAMME INFO

The SYT Making Space programme enables emerging theatre-makers, age 16 to 25 years, to develop their ideas, unlock their creative potential and make connections with other art forms and artists. The programme supports the testing of new ideas and collaborations or can be used to develop a work in progress.

The aim of Making Space is to cultivate the next generation of Scottish theatre makers by offering varied forms of support that can include:

  • Allocated space and time in a Glasgow city centre arts venue
  • Mentoring from industry professionals
  • Invitation to perform and share work at SYT
  • Reflection sessions with SYT’s Associate Director (Pathways)

Who is Making Space for?Emerging theatre makers across Scotland (age 16 to 25 years) with a genuine passion for entering the theatre industry. Making Space is suitable for peoplewho can confidently develop their work independently and have a proven track record of performance and / or a good level of broader theatre-making skills.

What are the benefits for a Making Space participant?

How do I apply? Complete the online Making Space form to PITCH your idea

If successful, when would I be using the space?You choose from one of the options that suit you and is your preferred way of working and we will negotiate the exact dates with you if you are accepted onto the programme.

Why do I have to pitch?This is a creative way to make a statement of what theatre you want to create and helps the artistic team understandthe level of support you require.

What is the selection process?We are looking for a strong idea with a clear intention from an individual or group, with a proven track record in the performing arts. We will take into consideration whether this is the right time in your career development and if you have the appropriate skill level to achieve your ambition.

You willreceive an automated email saying we have received your application and we will tell you the decision 3 weeks after the application deadline. If unsuccessful, we will give you feedback and you are welcome to apply again.

How many times can I apply for Making Space? Maximum of 2 applications can be made each year. There are four opportunities within the year to be part of Making Space; Jan/Feb, May/June, Sep/Oct and Nov/Dec.

I have not participated in any SYT activities before, can I still apply?Yes, we strongly encourage applications from any young theatre-makers from across Scotland.

Are there any opportunities to share the created work with an audience?

Yes, it is an expectation that Making Space artists share some work that they have developed and at points in the year you may have the opportunity to be part of scratch nights where you can share your work with industry professionals.

I don’t live in Glasgow, is there funding available for travel and accommodation?

No

Can I do this in my home town?

We hope to build partnerships with venues around Scotland in the future but at the moment we only offer rehearsal space in Glasgow.
