Making a Stepping Stool
Objectives: The student will cut, construct, and build a Stepping Stool
Equipment and Materials:18 mm G1S Plywood (pre rough cut), Radial arm saw, Table Saw, Drill Press, ½” and ¾” speed bits, Band Saw, Biscuit jointer and #0 biscuitsMeasuring Tape, Pencil, Coping Saw, Sander, Straight edge, Sandpaper (assorted grits)

Procedures:Key Points:
- Layout pieces to best use supplied plywood(a) Demonstrated on chalk board
Have teacher inspectlayout before moving on ______
- Cut individual rough pieces from plywood(a) Using the radial arm saw
- Cut the TOP to the final outside dimensions(a) Following the attached plan
(b) Use the Table and Radial Arm Saws
- Findcentres of the holes for the hand slot ends
Have teacher inspect layout before moving on ______
- Drill two holes to form the ends of thehand(a) Use the ½” speed bit and drill press
slot
- Connect the two holes to form the hand slot(a) Draw guidelines connecting the two circles
(b) Use a coping saw
- Cut the SKIRTS to width and length(a) Use the Table andRadial ArmSaw
following the dimensions on the plan
- Mark out the angles on the SKIRTS(a) Follow the plan
- Setup the Radial Arm Saw to the proper angle

- Cut the angles on the SKIRTS
- Mark out the dados on the rough side of the SKIRTS
Have teacher inspect layout before moving on ______
- Cut the dados in the SKIRTS(a) use the Table Saw and mitre gauge
- Mark out the LEGS your remaining plywood
- Cut the LEGS rough dimensions(a) Use the Table and Radial Arm Saws
- Find the centre of the hole
- Mark out the 45° angle
Have teacher inspect layout before moving on ______
- Drill the hole and cut the triangle out
of the bottom of the LEGS
- Mark out the profile for the side of the LEGS
- Cut the profile on the LEGS(a) Use the Band Saw
(b) Make relief cuts where necessary
- Sand the parts smooth and clean(a) Careful not to sand through the top
ply on the plywood
- Glue and nail the LEGS into the(a) Clamp joints after nailing them

- Mark out four locations for biscuits
on the top of the LEGS and bottom

- Remove any excess glue
- Make a final sanding(a) Careful not to sand through the plies
