Making a Stepping Stool

Objectives: The student will cut, construct, and build a Stepping Stool

Equipment and Materials:18 mm G1S Plywood (pre rough cut), Radial arm saw, Table Saw, Drill Press, ½” and ¾” speed bits, Band Saw, Biscuit jointer and #0 biscuitsMeasuring Tape, Pencil, Coping Saw, Sander, Straight edge, Sandpaper (assorted grits)

Procedures:Key Points:

  1. Layout pieces to best use supplied plywood(a) Demonstrated on chalk board

Have teacher inspectlayout before moving on ______

  1. Cut individual rough pieces from plywood(a) Using the radial arm saw
  1. Cut the TOP to the final outside dimensions(a) Following the attached plan

(b) Use the Table and Radial Arm Saws

  1. Findcentres of the holes for the hand slot ends

  1. Drill two holes to form the ends of thehand(a) Use the ½” speed bit and drill press

slot

  1. Connect the two holes to form the hand slot(a) Draw guidelines connecting the two circles

(b) Use a coping saw

  1. Cut the SKIRTS to width and length(a) Use the Table andRadial ArmSaw

following the dimensions on the plan

  1. Mark out the angles on the SKIRTS(a) Follow the plan
  2. Setup the Radial Arm Saw to the proper angle

  1. Cut the angles on the SKIRTS
  2. Mark out the dados on the rough side of the SKIRTS

Have teacher inspect layout before moving on ______

  1. Cut the dados in the SKIRTS(a) use the Table Saw and mitre gauge
  2. Mark out the LEGS your remaining plywood
  3. Cut the LEGS rough dimensions(a) Use the Table and Radial Arm Saws
  4. Find the centre of the hole
  5. Mark out the 45° angle

Have teacher inspect layout before moving on ______

  1. Drill the hole and cut the triangle out

of the bottom of the LEGS

  1. Mark out the profile for the side of the LEGS
  1. Cut the profile on the LEGS(a) Use the Band Saw

(b) Make relief cuts where necessary

  1. Sand the parts smooth and clean(a) Careful not to sand through the top

ply on the plywood

  1. Glue and nail the LEGS into the(a) Clamp joints after nailing them

dados on the SKIRTS(b) Allow to dry over night

  1. Mark out four locations for biscuits

on the top of the LEGS and bottom

of the TOP

  1. Cut the slots for the biscuits(a) Use 0 biscuits
  1. Glue the TOP to the base of the(a) Clamp the joints after they together

Stepping Stool(b) Allow to dry over night

  1. Remove any excess glue
  1. Make a final sanding(a) Careful not to sand through the plies
