SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2012/2013 ACADEMIC YEAR.

GUIDELINES TO APPLICANTS

The goal of Female Scholarship Foundation (FSF) is to “To increase the enrolment, retention and improve their academic performance of female under graduate students at Makerere University; with specific emphasis on the sciences, and giving priority to applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented geographical areas within Uganda”

PART A

  1. Target scholarship beneficiaries

a)Ugandan female students below the age of 25 years.

b)Those who have been admitted to Makerere University on Private Sponsorship Scheme

c)Those to be admitted on the basis of ‘A’ level results only (current and previous years)

d)Those not admitted on Uganda Government sponsorship to any Public University.

e)Those who do not hold any other Scholarship e.g. District Scholarship, KULIKA, etc

f)Those from genuinely poor socio-economic backgrounds.

Target Disciplines considered

Priority will be given to science – based degree programmes with an added advantage for Bachelor of Science with Education. There are also limited places for programmes in humanities.

  1. Scholarship Coverage

Limited to tuition and functional fees only for the stipulated period of study

  1. Scholarship Conditions:

a)The award covers only the years specified for the program.

b)Being asked to stay put due to poor academic performance automatically leads to cancellation of the scholarship.

c)Failure to complete studies and graduate will require the student to refund all the money spent on her.

d)Every beneficiary is expected to participate in the Female Scholarship Foundation (FSF) activities

e)Payments of tuition and functional fees will be made directly to the University.

f)Every beneficiary is expected to exhibit exemplary conduct both in and outside the University.

g)The program will meet no other expenses other than those specified in the award letter.

h)On completion of studies, beneficiaries must give back to the Makerere Female Scholarship Foundation for its sustainability.

  1. The application is incomplete if: -

a)The recommendation from the Head Teacher of the ‘A’ level School attended by the applicant is not submitted. This recommendation should be submitted in a sealed envelope with the Head Teacher’s signature appearing across the seal. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make sure that the Head Teacher’s recommendation is submitted.

b)It is not endorsed by LC officials specified in the application form.

  1. A completed application should include the following:

a)A fully completed application form

b)Admission letter to Makerere University

c)Letter of recommendation from the Head Teacher of the A-level School attended.

d)Endorsement by the LC 1 of the District of Residence

e)Photocopies of ‘O’ and ‘A’ level Academic Documents

f)Three Passport size photographs with the applicant’s name written at the back in block letters. (Please do not staple the Photographs. Submit them in an envelope).

g)A copy of the applicant’s Birth Certificate

h)Copies of death certificate(s) of biological parent (s) (if applicable).

i)Hand drawn physical map of LC I /Village of residence with clear directions of how to get to the home of residence (indicate approximate distances in kilometres).

NOTE: INCOMPLETE APPLICATION FORMS WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED

  1. Once awarded a scholarship, candidates should be able to demonstrate high academic ability and discipline.
  1. CASES OF IMPERSONATION, FALSIFICATION OF DOCUMENTS OR GIVING FALSE / INCOMPLETE INFORMATION, WHENEVER DISCOVERED EITHER AT THE TIME OF RECEIVING THE AWARD OR AFTERWARDS WILL LEAD TO AUTOMATIC CANCELLATION OF THE AWARD, REFUND OF THE MONEY ALREADY SPENT ON A BENEFICIARY / PROSECUTION IN THE COURTS OF LAW OF UGANDA.
  1. The deadline for submission of completed application forms is Tuesday 17th August 2012. The completed forms should be submitted to the Gender Mainstreaming Division Room 401, Level 4, Senate Building, Makerere University.

NOTE:

  • All applicants or those who will submit the applications should ensure that they receive an acknowledgement of receipt of the application form from the FSF office.
  • Applications slipped under the doors of any office will NOT be accepted.

PART B:

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE OCCUPATION OF THE PARENTS OR GUARDIAN

This information must be as detailed as possible. Scanty information will be a disadvantage to your candidature. The following categories are given as a guide but are not exhaustive.

  1. If your father/mother/guardian is or was a businessperson, describe the business eg if he/she is a hawker, petty trader, retail trader, wholesaler or manufacturer, describe the categories of the goods he/she trades in. In addition, give the physical address of the business i.e. where the premises are located physically and the telephone number if any, of the business or the person.
  1. If your father /mother/guardian is or was a civil servant, state the position held in the civil service, the corresponding salary scale and state which ministry or government department she/he works or worked. If she/he works in the private sector or Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), state the company / organisation, the position held and the salary scale or salary. In addition, give the physical address i.e. the physical location of the company/organisation and the telephone number if any, of the organisation or the person.
  1. If your father/mother/guardian is or was a farmer state whether he/she is or was a subsistence farmer, mixed/integrated/semi-commercial or commercial farmer and the type of farming i.e. whether it is keeping livestock or growing crops or a combination of both. In addition, you should estimate the number of acres on which the farming is done and the telephone number if any.
