Steps (including options)
  • Major Activity of focus : The students will complete a case study based on information learned about appropriate strategies for working with students who struggle with writing.
STEPS:
1)Review of prior knowledge: Since the students have had a class on teaching writing (EED 433) use this time period to review what they remember from the class and from reading the part of the chapter about teaching writing.
2)Assessment: Focus on CBM that are currently being used for assessing writing especially for RtI and special education probes. (Since they are taking an assessment class at the same time as this course, you may want to contact their assessment instructor and review what he/she is presenting in this area so that you are not overlapping.)
3)Writing strategies, Accommodations/modifications:
You may want to start with the suggested module from the IRIS center on SRSD prior to starting this area
There is a video to demonstrate one teacher’s method for increasing brainstorming for her students. It is from Success at the Core and is titled “Moving Beyond Brainstorming”
OPTION OF ACTIVITIES:
Review Graphic organizers and how the students might use those with their students (suggestions for how to organize this are given in the ppt.)
Have the students research other types of writing strategies. There are links in this lesson plan for some sites that suggest those.
Review ideas for accommodations/modifications for writing (see links provided in this lesson plan for resources or use your own)
4) Case study: Use the information reviewed and apply it to the IRIS center case study. The link and directions are in the Resources section of this lesson plan.
Reflection/Exit ticket:
