Maine Jamboree '07

Dear Scouts, Scouters and Families,

It is with great excitement and anticipation that we extend this invitation to all of you to participate in “Maine Jam ’07.” The Pine Tree Council will be hosting this “Brownsea Centennial Celebration” to bring together all of our Scouts and their families to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Scouting in England. This event promises to have something for everybody!

Through the Maine National Guard, we have a commitment to help the support the “Maine Jam ‘07” with logistics, equipment displays, demonstrations and much more! Many more community and service organizations such as the Maine State Police, the U. S. Army and more will be on hand to support Scouting!

After reading this “Maine Jam ‘07” guide, you will see that many hours of planning have already taken place to assure there will be something for everyone. There will be a terrific arena show on Saturday night, stage shows throughout the day on Saturday, a merit badge midway, shooting sports, games, Trailblazer Day for our Cub Scouts, demonstrations, Scouting displays, a trading post, and lots of other activities!

Be sure to mark you calendars now for “Maine Jam ‘07” on October 19th – 21st at the Oxford Fairgrounds. You won’t want to miss out on this outstanding event, we promise it will have something for everybody!

Who can attend the Maine Jam:
The Maine Jam promises to be a huge celebration to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of Scouting in England and we don’t want anyone to miss it! All members in Pine Tree Council, whether they are Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Explorers, Venture or Varsity crews, adult leaders, volunteers and families are welcomed!
Weekend Camping is limited to Troops, Post & Crews along with 2nd year Webelos if they camp with a troop.
All are welcomed to join us on Saturday as day visitors with special events, like Trailblazer Day, planned especially for Cub Scouts and their families! Activities for our younger Scouts will be happening all day long from 9 AM to 5:50 PM and the huge arena show will kick-off at 8 PM. Day Visitors are asked to leave the fairgrounds by 10:00 PM.
Maine Jam Fees
Weekend Campers:
·  $16 per camper if registered by October 5, 2007
·  $20 per camper if registered after October 5th
Saturday Day Visitors:
·  $6 per visitor if registered by October 5, 2007
·  $8 per visitor if registered after October 5th
·  Children under 3 are FREE
Location & Directions:
The Maine Jam ’07 will be held at the Oxford County Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds are located off Route 26 in downtown Oxford, Maine. Oxford is located on Map 11 in “The Maine Atlas and Gazetteer. Please enter through the Main Gate Entrance off Pottle Road. Additional parking lots will be available, with shuttles as needed. Parking information will be available at the Maine Gate.

MAINE JAM ’07 TIPS
·  BE PREPARED! This will be a once in a lifetime event for many of us! Being organized makes for a smoother day!
·  Please pre-register for the Maine Jam! This will help us immensely with the preplanning needed for an event of this size!
·  Plan on carpooling as much as possible.
·  Pack light! This event is all about program not camping!
·  Plan easy meals to allow Scouts to participate fully in the program!
·  Bring ground cloths to sit on at the Saturday night arena Show!
·  Order trading post items early!
·  Encourage patch trading!
·  Come and have fun!!!
WHAT TO BRING FOR DAY VISITORS
·  Good walking shoes, Dressed for the weather!
·  Bottle water and snacks
·  Sunscreen / bug spray
·  Money for the trading post or concessions
·  NO PETS
WHAT TO BRING FOR WEEKEND CAMPING
Each camping unit will be assigned a site in their district subcamp. Units are required to provide all their own gear for the Jamboree. Troop trailers will be allowed in the subcamps for unloading Friday evening and packing Sunday morning. Troop trailers will not be allowed to stay in the subcamps during the Jamboree.
Units are encouraged to spruce up their area in subcamp with flags, banners, dining flies, cooking equipment and lanterns. Units are asked not to build their own gateways but to participate with a unit display. Every unit should bring a weatherproof display (no more than 4’ x 4’) highlighting a place, time or event in Scouting history.
Campers will be required to bring their own personal camping gear. Be prepared, the weather in mid-October could be hot and sunny or wet and cold.
Food will be available for purchase from various food vendors for Saturday only. It is recommended that campers bring a bag lunch or snacks for Saturday lunch.

FIRES
Oxford County Fairgrounds has a no open fire policy. Units are asked to respect this policy and not build campfires. Charcoal will be allowed for cooking, but charcoal fires must be above ground and controlled.
Lost and Found
A lost and found box will be in the Trading Post. The Trading Post staff will hold valuables. Anyone finding items are requested to bring them to the lost and found box at the Trading Post.
Pine Tree Council Refund Policy:
Individuals or groups that cancel their reservation 30 prior to the date of the event receive a refund of fees paid, less 15% administrative charge.
NO REFUNDS WILL BE MADE AFTER THE 30-DAY CANCELLATION DEADLINE.

Subcamps

Each District Subcamp at the Maine Jam ’07 is named after a place in Scouting history to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of Scouting! The districts have each designed a Council Shoulder Strip or CSP for the Maine Jam along with a district gateway to mark this historic event! The five CSP’s will coordinate with the 4 ½ “ pentagon shaped Maine Jam patch to make a large jacket patch or fine collection. Each CSP can be worn as an official CSP on BSA uniforms.

Every weekend camper (youth and adult) attending the Maine Jam ’07 will receive as part of their admission price a center patch and one of their districts CSP.

Day visitors will receive a special edition Maine Jam ’07 patch!

The Subcamp names & patches will be:

Downeast District will be in London -Where in 1909, William D. Boyce, was helped by a British Boy Scout to find his way across a foggy London street.

Kennebec Valley will be in Gilwell Park –The site of the first Woodbadge course in 1919, near London, England. Today Gilwell Park, boasts a campsite and activity center for scouting groups as well as a conference center for Scout leaders.

Abnaki District will be in Silver Bay – The site of the 1st Boy Scouts of America camp held at Silver Bay in Lake George, New York. At the time, Silver Bay was a YMCA camp.

York District will be in Olympia – The site of the 1st World Scout Jamboree in 1920. Olympia Halls in located in Kensington, London. 8000 Scouts from 34 countries attended the event!

Casco Bay will be in Hylands Park –Which will be the site of 2007 World Scout jamboree to be held this summer and will be part of the Scouting 2007 100th Anniversary celebration uniting Scouts from all around the world!

Every weekend camper attending the Maine Jam ’07 will receive as part of their admission price a center patch and one of their districts CSP. Scouts can trade or collect the other CSP’s for their own great Maine Jam’ 07 souvenir! CSP’s are available on the Maine Jam ’07 pre-order trading post form or at the Maine Jam Trading Post.

Program Highlights

Arena Show – Saturday night should be a night of fun and excitement as we reflect on the history of Scouting, watch an exciting fireworks show and are entertained by some of our own Scouts as well as a special musical guest!

Stage Shows – Throughout the day on Saturday, come to one of two locations at the fairgrounds where some special guests can entertain you. Can you imagine what it is like to be a clown? What does it really take to be a lumberjack? Cooking: It really can be a lot of fun!

Merit Badge Midway – An area dedicated to learning a little about merit badges that you may not be familiar with. We have experts from all over Maine coming to show you a new trade or hobby or profession, and along the way you might even earn yourself a merit badge or two (or at least a partial!).

Scouting Showcase – Where can you come to one place and see things like a giant cast iron griddle that let’s you cook over an open fire? Or learn about how you and your troop can go rock climbing in the winter? You can plan a whitewater trip for you and your troop! It is here you can learn from Maine’s resources on what is available to you!

Jamboree on the Air and On the Internet – This is where we leverage various technologies to connect with other scouts and JOTA events around the country and world, to broaden everyone's understanding about the international nature of the Scouting Movement, enhance international goodwill. What does a weather balloon and radio Controlled car have to do with this? You have to come to find out!

Early Scouting at Brownsea Island– Come see exhibits and hands on displays of what it was like to be a Scout 100 years ago when it all started. What games were played? What did a handbook look like?

Shooting Sports – How good a shot are you with a laser gun? Have you ever tried your hand at Archery? What does it take for a Cub Scout to be a good shot with a BB gun? Find out and have a great time trying at our shooting sports area.

Cub Scout Trailblazer Day – This is a chance for Cub Scouts and families to learn a little about the great outdoors! Sponsored in conjunction with the Maine Sportsman alliance. Highlights to include:

Scout Races and Sports – Want to get a group together to see if you are the tug of war champion? Want to try your hand at a climbing wall? Bring your den or patrol to try your hand at a challenging relay race to see who is the fastest at Maine Jam!

Special activities for Explorers, Crews and Posts: A fireman’s muster pitting fire post against post! Who will win the challenges? Crime Scene Investigations for the police explorers- can you solve the mysteries?

Special Events & Guest Speakers: And everything else we have to offer, including checking out some cool National Guard Equipment, climbing walls, or seeing what our local fire and police really do to keep us all protected. Geocache? What the heck is that! AND LOTS MORE!
