Dear Mr. McMillon,
In two days, you will lead your first shareholder meeting as President and CEO of the world’s largest and richest retail company. As you prepare to tout Walmart’s growth and financial gains, we urge you to take a moment to actually listen to the workers on whose backs that wealth was built.
Today, workers in Walmart stores across the country are taking action to call on you and the rest of the company’s executive team and board to take a leadership role in ending poverty wages and the illegal retaliation against workers who speak out.
As people of faith whobelieve all workers should be treated with dignity and respect, weare committed to tenaciously stand alongside the Walmart workers pushingfor respect on the job, a minimum pay of $25,000 a year and an end to the intimidation and retaliation against workers.
Walmart is the driver of the low wages, part-time work and erratic scheduling that keeps many women and men from being able to support their families. As a result, many families are forced to live in poverty and rely on food stamps and other public programs.
In addition, companies like Walmart have forced our economy off balance. The wealth of 42 percent of American families is in the hands of one family – the Waltons, who control Walmart. Meanwhile, the majority of jobs at Walmart pay less than $25,000 a year.
Every major faith tradition affirms the dignity of work, and as people of faith we are called to honor and protect the basic rights of all workers, including the right to provide for their family without fear of retaliation for addressing issues of discrimination, safety at work, status or organizing.
Walmart is the glaring example of inequality. As the country’s biggest retail company, it helped legitimize an economy benefiting the interests of a few wealthy executives at the expense of working people.
As the company’s new CEO, you have an opportunity (and a choice) to change the path of our country’s largest employer. From your place at the helm of the country’s largest private employer, you have enormous influence over the US economy. We urge you to hear the workers and the community.
Thank you,
