WALKS PROVIDED AT SLIEVE GULLION FOREST PARK

Magical Teddy Bear's Picnic

Recommended for:

Nursery/reception - ages 3 to 4

If you go down to Slieve Gullion wood today you're in for a big surprise! Slieve Gullion's teddy bears have gone missing and the pupils are asked to help find them. Searching high and low, the children discover clues, learn songs and rhymes, play nature games and complete fun forest tasks (e.g. looking at the shapes, colours and textures of leaves) to help find the teddy bears.

The Fairy Kingdom

Recommended for:

Foundation Stage: Primary 1 (age 4 to 5)

Primary 2 (age 5 to 6)

Slieve Gullion's fairies care for the forest and everything that lives there. The Fairy King needs help to keep the forest safe from the trolls, pixies and imps. Can the children help protect the forest creatures' home? Through hands on activities, the children learn about Slieve Gullion's forest, play nature games and complete fun tasks to help the forest fairies save their home.

Finn's Enchanted Mountain

Recommended for:

Key Stage 1: Primary 3 (age 6 to 7) and Primary 4 (age 7 to 8)

This magical curriculum-linked forest walk encourages children to engage their senses and natural curiosity to uncover the natural wonders of Slieve Gullion Forest. Following in the footsteps of Finn McCool, the pupils explore the woodland’s wildlife while learning about Slieve Gullion's magical myths and legends.

The programme will be adapted to suit the age of the group and key activities may include: myths and legends, mini-beasts, birds, mammals, seasonal changes, migration, conservation/caring for the forest, camouflage, hibernation (autumn walks only).

Finn's Fabulous Forest

Recommended for:

Key Stage 2: Primary 5 (age 8 to 9), Primary 6 (age 9 to 10) and Primary 7 (age 10 to 11)

Larger than life Finn Mc Cool is said to have once rode his horse to the top of Slieve Gullion through the forest. Many of the trees living there today are very old… are they as old as Finn? Many of the trees are very tall… do you think they could be as tall as Finn?

This walk is full of activities to help pupils study the woodland habitat and develop their scientific skills and knowledge. Through tailored tasks they explore how living things depend upon and adapt to their environment. They are encouraged to gain a sense of ownership of Slieve Gullion (eco-guardians) and become more aware of their own role in caring for the environment and their local area.
