Magical Grading System

May 10, 2012

This past semester I encountered one of the more interesting ways to grade a student, but also one of the more effective ways in getting students motivated to get a good grade. To start off, the name of this mysterious is rightfully so called the Magical Grading System. This system is magical in the sense that it probably takes someone the full semester to realize how everything works, but once that connection happens the student can fully take advantage of the opportunity to get a good grade if they work for it. First, the ultimate goal of the class is to get an A, and to do so, a student must complete enough work to meet the 400 point barrier, which gives the student an A. There are certain things a student must complete, those being the mid-term and the endterm. This is where the magical grading system comes into play. Your highest grade out of both of those is worth 50 percent, the second counts for 30 percent. If the student elects to take the final which isn’t mandatory, the out of all 3 of those exams, the lowest counts for 20 percent.Even if you get a bad score, you can redo them at any point.

Next and probably the most important piece to getting to that 400 point mark would be the use of extra credit. A student has the ability to do 100 points worth of extra credit, which could make up for bad test scores. These extra credit opportunities could range from writing a 1-2 paper on a sporting event and how management is implemented in to it, to doing the test your knowledge’s in the back of each section in the study guide.

Using this Magical Grading System is a great motivational tool to get the students to reach an A in the class. This system wants its students to get good grades while doing a good amount of work to get there. Because of the percentages with the midterms and the endterms, it gives the students more motivation to do better on the next one if they don’t do as well as they wanted to. It lets the student prosper on one exam and not do so well on the other and they won’t be so frustrated because they can still get an A, which is always the ultimate goal for a student even though people say that it should be about knowledge rather than grades.

The use of extra credit gives the student the motivation to gain an A in the class because if they are low on points, these opportunities give them the chance to gain more points. Also, there are so many extra credit opportunities that it is almost impossible to not have something to write a 1 page paper on to gain 10 points just like that.

I am a firm believer in the magical grading system. I believe that it gives the student the freedom to write about almost anything to relate it to management, which lets the student to be able to see managing techniques in the real world.
