The SPARTS program was introduced at Magee in 1985 to offer an educational program to students competing in “High Performance Athletics” at the provincial, national or international levels, and students performing in an area of the “Arts” at an extremely high level of excellence. The SPARTS program offers students in grades 8 through 12 the opportunity to complete their academic requirements at Magee in preparation for secondary school graduation and post-secondary entrance, while allowing them to maintain their rigorous training and competition schedule outside of school. Magee’s SPARTS program is open to “high performance” artistic or athletic performers who are seriously committed to their education, training and competition.

Eligibility for the Program

Academic:

Applicants to the SPARTS program must maintain a minimum “B” average, with no failing marks or unsatisfactory behavior or work habits, in the year prior to applying for entrance to the program.

Sport/Art Qualification:

Applicants must be involved in the activities of a recognized sport/art governing body at a “high performance” or “excellence program” level. For athletes, this means involvement at the provincial, national or international level; club athletics will not be accepted. For musicians, applicants must have completed RCM Grade 10 level, be minimally working toward their ARCT, and be involved in serious public performance. Other “arts” or artistic performance studies are also considered.

The activity must be one for which training is year-round, and requires a modified school schedule to accommodate training/competition demands. All applicants must be under the supervision and training of a recognized and qualified provincial / national coach or instructor for a minimum of 25 hours per week, excluding competitions. The coach/instructor must sign to validate these hours.

Admission:

Once accepted, participants are enrolled in the SPARTS program for one year, with the expectation that, provided academic requirements and training are maintained, participants will continue through to graduation. Participation of each student will be reviewed annually to ensure continued suitability for the program. Participants are expected to sign and abide by the terms of a contract that outlines academic, behavioural, educational, training and competition objectives. Parents, instructors (coaches or representatives of affiliated governing bodies), the Magee SPARTS Coordinator, and the student will all sign the contract.

Application Process:

Students who meet the above criteria and who are interested in applying for placement into Magee’s SPARTS program are asked to complete the attached application form and include all documents outlined on that form. Completed packages must be received at Magee by March 3, 2014 for admission in September 2014. Successful candidates will be notified via mail by March 14, 2014. Upon confirmation of acceptance, an interview will be arranged between the parents, student and SPARTS Coordinator for personal introductions, timetable consultation and an opportunity to complete any applicable forms. A confirmed training/practice schedule must be provided during this meeting, along with the SPARTS Student Agreement Form.

School Expectations

§  Participants will provide the SPARTS Coordinator with a yearly schedule of training, performance or competition.

§  Students are expected to complete all assignments in order to receive credit for their courses.

§  When students must miss school for pre-arranged competitions or performances, students are required to fill out a SPARTS absence form and have it signed by all teachers. Students are responsible for completing all missed work, and discussing appropriate timelines/due dates with teachers.

and the “Graduation Program”

Students entering the SPARTS program in 2014 will follow the 2004 Graduation Program. This program outlines course requirements, including examinations, for grades 10–12. In brief, the following are required to earn a high school graduation diploma, known as a ‘Dogwood’ in BC:

SPARTS students earn course credits through a combination of studying on- and off-timetabled courses at Magee, and through on-line and independent directed study. Most students study 5 courses each year, and receive credit through their sport or art activity in the areas of PE and/or Fine Arts. Credit for these courses is given through a “TS” (Transfer Standing) which indicates that the student has completed the course, but does not affect the student’s Grade Point Average.

Depending on their SPARTS activity, participants may be eligible to receive credit for some provincial and externally credited courses, including the following:
