Responsible to: -MacMillan Benefits Advice Service Manager

Job Purpose and Role

To deliver a specialist income maximisation service for people affected by cancer living or receiving treatment in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire.

To provide high quality advice and support including comprehensive entitlement checks and information for patients, carers and health professionals.

To provide specialist welfare benefits casework up to and including advocacy and representation at the Lower and Upper Tribunals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1.To provide benefits advice and casework services for patients, carers and family members.

2.To provide advice, consultancy and training services to volunteers and health and social care staff.

3.To deliver services by phone, e-mail and in-person at hospital settings (or where appropriate other Health and Macmillan environments); and in exceptional circumstances undertake home visits.

4.To maintain detailed electronic case records of work undertaken and to ensure compliance with the quality assurance standards.

5.To establish and maintain good working relationships with benefit paying administrations, employment agencies, fuel agencies, and voluntary organisations, which can be utilised by clients and other team colleagues.

6.To identify and agree with the Macmillan Benefits Advice Service Manager areas of specific need within cancer care. To make proposals on ways of meeting those needs within a local work programme.

7.To participate in regular meetings with other Macmillan Benefits Advisors and the wider advice community to identify common areas of need and to propose joint initiatives as appropriate.

8.To participate in formal and informal training.

9.To participate in the production of training material for staff and in the development and production of easily understood information for people affected by cancer as agreed. To ensure such material is sensitive to the needs of people from minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities.

10.To liaise with and advise as appropriate those staff from other statutory organisations who make referrals to the service e.g. Community Nurses, Health Visitors, Hospital staff.

11.To support Macmillan’s policy, media and campaign work by providing case studies, activity data and feedback as required.

12.To increase knowledge and understanding of cancer and its treatments through appropriate training and development.

13.To undertake such other duties commensurate with the grade and responsibility of the job.
