LURC site visit to Redington

Tuesday July 11, 2006

(Wear sturdy shoes/boots, bring wind breakers, etc. just in case.

Box lunches and drinks will be provided.)

10:30: Meet in meeting room at Sugarloaf Hotel: Maine Mountain Power personnel will describe the itinerary, go over maps and photo-simulations, answer questions, etc.

11:00: Meet at front of hotel: Drive to top of Sugarloaf (transportation will be provided for the Commissioners).

11:40 Arrive at top of Sugarloaf: (elevation 4,237’, above tree line). See views of entire region including Redington, Black Nubble, Saddleback, Mt Abraham, Crockers, Bigelow, Stratton biomass facility, etc. Eat lunch.

12:00: Optional hike: Down side trail toward the Appalachian Trail (AT).

1:00: Leave Summit of sugarloaf

1:40 - 1:50: Brief stop at Bigelow substation: See point of interconnect, 115 kV “H frame” power lines, and 34 kV single pole constructions. Drive by AT parking area on leaving.

2:15 - 2:30: Viewpoint: Stop along route 16 about 2 miles south of Stratton for viewpoint of Redington Mtn. and Black Nubble Mtn.

2:45: Turn on to IP Road: This is the access point for the project area. Stop at one representative bridge. Stop at one representative corner that would be straightened. Stop at Maintenance facility site/fall avian monitoring radar location.

3:30: Substation/power line area: Brief stop in valley between mountains.

4:00: Black Nubble Mtn., east side: Views of Redington Mountain.

4: 30: Stop at the Shale Pit - Final Question & Answer period: Maps, plans, etc. available for review. Answer any final questions.

5:00: Optional hikes to Black Nubble Mtn. from shale pit: (Non hikers return to Sugarloaf.)

1 - Short hike along old logging road. (1 hour)

2 - Longer hike to Black Nubble ridge. (2+ hours)

Note: July 12th Noon - The Commissioners can see Redington Mtn. and Black Nubble Mtn. from one of the photo-simulation locations by driving a mile west from Rangeley to the top of cemetery hill, at their discretion.
