Did you know that next year’s international convention will be held July 17 – 20, 2014 in Tokyo, Japan? How about it?! What an opportunity. Start saving NOW!

PROGRAM:

Mike Korcek, speaking about NIU athletics. Mike’s been around NIU since his freshman year in 1966-67. Who was the greatest student athlete during NIU’s first 50 years? Jerry Smith knew it was Reno Nori (1932-1936) earned 17 varsity letters in 5 sports (football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, track), and played in the NFL. How about the greatest quarterback? Mike ran through quite a few names… The House that Bork Built (football stadium) figures into the story, and sways Mike’s answer to George Bork. If that didn’t create enough discussion, Mike then asked who’s the best running back in NIU history? NIU has had 3 national rushing leaders. But Mike didn’t go with any of them, and instead chose LeShan Johnson. He was a unanimous 1st team All-American, and finished 6th in the Heisman voting, playing for a 4-10 team that didn’t get on TV. And so where does this put Jordan Lynch? He had 4956 total yards in offense and was the 1st in the NCAA to throw for over 3500 and run for over 1200 yards. Lynch is worth the price of admission to at least one of the 5 Huskie home games this year. You probably should take the opportunity to go see him. What’s the most significant accomplishment in NIU sports history? Beating ‘Bama? The Orange Bowl? Novak turning the program around? Earning a standing-o from the Bama fans in Tuscaloosa? Mike’s going with making University Division in 1969 (since that made everything else possible).

Quote for the day

Treat a person as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat him as what he could be, and he will become what he should be.

- Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jimmy Johnson
