Course Description:

The seventh grade language arts curriculum is a blend of literature, written communication, and oral communication. This year, eachlearner will read and write across various genres as well as utilize essential listening, speaking, and viewing skills through a variety of class activities including presentations and debates.

Textbooks: Elements of Literature and Elements of Writing by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston publishers.

Course Outline:

Unit 1 (1st 9 weeks):Tears of a Tiger

Unit 2 (2nd 9 weeks): The Outsiders

Unit3 (3rd 9 weeks):Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Unit 4 (4th 9 Weeks):The Giver

In each unit, each learner will be expected to use Edgenuity, My Path, and USA Test Prep as a supplement to the units’ objectives and 7th grade standards. Each learner may work at his or her own pace, however, all unit assignments must be completed by the end of each grading period (9weeks).

Learner Expectations:

Make-Up Work Policy: It is extremely important to attend class regularly. If a learner is absent for any reason, it is his/her responsibility to obtain missed assignments from their teachers. According to the Henry County Board of Education, learners have one day for each day absent plus one additional day to make up missing assignments.

Supplies:Learners are expected to come to class prepared each day with a notebook, an agenda, completed assignments, writing utensils, and apositive respectful attitude.Learners must have access to technology inside and outside of the school to complete personalized assignments. Suggestions: personal laptop, tablet, county library, school library

Homework:Learners should read for at least 20 minutes every night. In accordance to the Common Core Standards, Hampton Middle School learners are required to read 25 books or the equivalent of 1,000,000 words. Learners will need to keep up with a reading log to be turned in on Fridays. The learners will also have writing assignments, high-quality projects, etc. throughout the year.

Standards for Learner Conduct

  1. Follow ALL of Hampton Middle School’s standards for learner behavior.
  2. Raise your hand before talking or leaving your seat.
  3. Maintain silence in the hallway.
  4. Come to class with ALL materials.
  5. Respect all teachers, classmates, and yourself.
  6. Completion of ALL assignments per 9 week period.
