Points carried forward from last meeting minutes

CAFOD - Making a Difference Survey

A survey designed to get people thinking about what they can do about poverty & the environment and to comment on CAFOD’s work (also hoping to raise some extra donations). Should we offer this in the parish (or will it be too much assuming we will be having the Harvest Appeal in September?) Agreed to make people aware of this survey, through newsletter.

Understanding CAFOD Day

CAFOD Notts have offered to run a day in Buxton – felt that this was a good initiative and could be promoted more widely in the community through Churches Together and/or deanery.

Property

Cora Plant sent news that she will be unable to play an active role in the property group due to commitments looking after her husband who is unwell. Fr Dennis will continue the work of this group.

Youth and Schools

Josie Muncaster reported that Issy is still training hard for her bicycle ride in France and is continuing to raise sponsorship money.

The Rainbow’s raised £162 to go to sponsoring two schoolgirls in Thailand for 3 years.

Music group

Sue Hardman reported that the music group will be singing and playing at the confirmation service at 7pm on Thursday 2nd July at St Anne’s Church with Clare O’Neill’s choir. Sue also said that the music group meets every Sunday from 9.45-10.45am and new singers are welcome. Musicians (especially flute players) would be welcome to join the group and should contact Sue to get more details. The group is less busy over the summer so the choir is less active.

Communications

Mary Rooney raised the point of publicizing the Parish in ‘Pure Buxton’ magazine. See separate minutes item. Mary also mentioned we have received only a few suggestions in the box at the back of the church so it may be good to move the box to a more prominent location. It will be moved to the table near the doors.

Justice and Peace

Mike Monaghan sent the following:

1. I spoke at all Masses June 20/21 about the Cafod climate change campaign and invited people to sign a petition form we collected about 100 which is excellent -I will forward them to Cafod.

2. I hope to put items in the News letter from time to time about this vital issue -especially in the lead up to the Copenhagen conference in December.

3. Could you please get the chairman to ask the meeting which Saturday in September would be best for the half day "Getting to Understand Cafod" -if we could give two dates that might be helpful -and ask who would hope to attend from the PPC -I will of course put out an invitation to all the parish nearer the date but I guess a significant proportion of attendees will be from the PPC.

Other events

Sue Hardman said there is a ‘Women’s Shopping evening’ organized by Sue Featherstone to take place on Wednesday 15th July starting at 7.30pm. The confirmation candidates are using it to raise money for visits to The Briers etc. There will be 15 stalls selling a range of items including home made soaps etc. The cost to enter is £2.

6.150 years Celebration

James Piercy said that now the new Head is in post at St Thomas More’s School, it would be a good time to ask them to be involved in the celebrations. James to prepare a letter to send to them in July/August.

Some copies of the year book have been printed and more are to come. James Piercy commented that releasing the yearbook in the summer was a good idea as it coincides with the committee year so that contact details are up to date for longer.

8.‘Pure Buxton’ magazine publicity

Mary Rooney suggested that the Mass times and other information should be put in the magazine so that visitors to the town can find out more easily. The magazine is distributed in hotels and some shops etc. It was suggested that the information published should be the same as that put in the Buxton Advertiser and mention the 150year anniversary next year.
