LP 4– Getting ready for Work Experience
Students investigate an area of work which interests them (possibly leading on from lesson 3). They learn about keeping safe and preparing themselves for the changing world of work by experiencing work tasks, relationships, environments and organisations.

AIMS
To develop their career management and employability skills, including basic and key skills.
(For students who find their own placements there are additional opportunities to practise job-seeking skills). / OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
- Recognise how work experience can help them develop the skills and knowledge needed for adult working life
- See how work experience can help with planning and managing their career
- Develop an understanding about organisations and their practices
PREPARATION Inc. TIME
- Data agreement form is completed by each student going on placement.
- Invite students to express preferences for particular placement possibilities related to their personal objectives.
- Explain the arrangements for finding placements and show students how to complete the necessary online paperwork including gaining parental permission and making a health declaration.

Work Experience Log Book
ACTIVITY
Step 1 – Starter. (5 mins) Working in pairs ask students to suggest ways in which a record of their work experience could be useful to them.
Step 2 – (15 mins) Students complete their placement form.
Step 3 –(10-20 mins) Demonstrate how to access the work experience log book. Brief students on the expectations of work experience providers and the school with regard to matters such as punctuality, attendance, dress codes and what to do in the event of a problem.
Step 4 – (15 mins) Arrange for students to role play or discuss how they would handle incidents and situations which can arise during placements, e.g. negotiating work tasks, being a victim of a practical joke, not understanding instructions, making a mistake, growing bored, poor time management.
Step 4 – (10 mins) Demonstrate which pages of the log book need to be completed before starting their work experience placement.
PLENARY
Small groups or in pairs create a list of questions to ask at interview
HOMEWORK
To review their daily progress and update the work experience log book adding any relevant attachments. To look at their targets and determine if they have been achieved
