Half Term 3: Amazing Creatures

Dear Parents,

Welcome back. We hope you had a lovely Christmas and New Year. Thank you for all the lovely presents and cards!

The following information will help you support your child’s learning this half term in their class with Mrs Helliwell and Mrs Carroll

Details of work covered this half term:

English / Extended stories/significant authors - Texts with Amazing Creatures e.g. ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ by Roald Dahl.
Information texts – Amazing Creatures from around the world
Traditional Stories- Pie Corbett ‘Cat, Bramble and Heron’.
Compose sentences which make sense using capital letters and full stops with increasing accuracy. Look at four different sentence types (question, command, statement, exclamation). Write legibly, using cursive script. Use past tense when writing stories. Use exclamation and question marks. Use commas. Present work appropriately depending on the genre.
Maths / Multiplication and Division
Calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division within the multiplication tables and write them using the multiplication (x), division (÷) and equals (=) sign. Solve problems involving multiplication and division. Show that the multiplication of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and division of one number by another cannot.
Measurement –Money
Recognise and use symbols of pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value. Find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money. Solve simple problems involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change.
Shape, Space and Measures
Statistics (construct simple pictograms, tally charts, bar graphs and tables), Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times.

Our Changing world

What lives in a habitat? How does a habitat change through the year? How do animals in a habitat depend on each other? How do animals change? To understand how animals are adapted to climate and habitat.
Computing / Branching Databases
To develop effective questions. To use a Branching database to order and group information
Geography / To understand how weather varies around the world - that it is coldest at the North and South poles and hottest nearest the Equator.
To be able to name the 7 continents and 5 oceans of the world
Use maps and atlases to identify where certain animals live or originate from.
Music / Pitch
This half term we will be thinking about pitch and having a go at writing a simple musical score.
Amazing Creatures – songs about animals.
Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens
D.T. / Puppets
Design and make an ‘Amazing Creature’ puppet.
R.E. / How and why do people pray
P.E. / Please make sure that your child has the correct P.E. kit including pumps that still fit!
Games: Throwing and Catching
Gymnastics: Spinning and turning/twisting
Remember P.E. Kits (including pumps) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays!
Homework / Reading – Books to be read and returned to school on Mondays.
Homework set on Wednesdays to be returned Mondays (or before)
Spellings tested on Friday.
