Lower School Science Teacher - ACES

JOB SUMMARY:

Lower School seeks an innovative and highly collaborative person to co-teach hands-on science to grades PK3 – 5 in classrooms as well as in the Abess Center for Environmental Studies (ACES). The primary role is to provide inquiry-based opportunities for students to develop understandings and skills necessary to function productively as problem-solvers in a scientific and technological world. This person needs to be passionate about inquiry-based, student centered learning and be committed to working as part of a team to foster positive attitudes towards self and society, as well as science. The ideal candidate will continually evolve the designing, organizing and implementing of relevant curriculum in an ever-changing world.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND TASKS:

  • Display a genuine disposition for engaging children and promoting curiosity and learning.
  • Be an integral part of the learning community and viewed as an ongoing learner who is fully engaged in professional growth.
  • Demonstrate a desire for feedback and a dedication to excellence.
  • Collaborate with co-teacher to plan and teach units that encompass hands-on exploration, and inquiry process skills that build directly on the student's conceptual framework using the Understanding by Design model of instruction
  • Collaborate with homeroom teachers and other specialist teachers to develop and teach interdisciplinary units of study.
  • Demonstrate expertise in a variety of presentation modes that accommodate different learning styles and purposefully generate opportunities for students to interact and share ideas with their peers.
  • Build a warm and inclusive classroom environment, implementing the practices of Responsive Classroom.
  • Develop meaningful formative and summative assessment where timely feedback is meaningful for student growth and success.
  • Work with LS Administration to build an elementary science continuum.
  • Consistently demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, including accountable conversation that promotes the school’s core values.
  • Perform supervisory duties as assigned.
  • Ability to establishand maintain cooperative and effectiveworking relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicateeffectively orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge andimplementationof relevant technology.
  • Desire to engage in continual professional growth and to be a member of a dynamic community of learners.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA or BS in Elementary Education/Science Education
  • Completed or in-progress master’s degree in science or education is preferred, but applicants with extensive, successful teaching experience are encouraged to apply.
  • 3 – 5 years teaching experience.
  • Ability to care for a wide variety of animals including small mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibians, including ordering bedding/food/supplies, feeding, cleaning cages, tanks etc.
  • Proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
  • Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish objectives of the school program.
  • Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
  • Must be able to use computer for communication and instruction.
  • Attend meetings, inservice or trainings required of this position that may/may not be during hours.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
  • Be able to 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Work in varied and extreme weather conditions, including extreme heat.
