A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND CONGRATULATE MARY FINLEY BABB OF EASLEY UPON HER RETIREMENT AS ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR INSTRUCTION FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PICKENS COUNTY, TO COMMEND HER FOR HER MANY YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE TO EDUCATION, AND TO WISH HER MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Mary Finley Babb received her B.A. in Elementary Education/Physical Education from Furman University in 1965; and

Whereas, Mary Finley Babb received her Master of Arts degree in Mathematics Education from Clemson University in 1970, her Masters Plus Thirty in Education in Mathematics Education from Clemson in 1980, and her Administration Certification from Clemson in 1989; and

Whereas, Mary Finley Babb has been involved with education for thirty-nine years. She began her career in education as a math teacher in Easley in 1965; and

Whereas, most of her career has been spent teaching in the classroom from the elementary level to the high school level until 1997 at various schools including Easley Junior High School, Flat Creek Elementary School in Weaverville, Monaview Junior High School in Greenville, Abbeville High School, Berea High School, and Liberty High School; and

Whereas, she has served as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction for the School District of Pickens County since 2000, Director of Curriculum/Staff Development from 1997-2000, Coordinator of Secondary Instruction from 1993-1997, and Lifelong Learning Project Coordinator from 1993-1994; and

Whereas, she served as Adjunct Professor (Business/Industry Education Partnership) at Clemson University from 1997-1999 and as Lead Teacher (Using Technology in the Teaching of Mathematics, Preparation for Math Teachers in the State) at Clemson from 1990-1993; and

Whereas, Mary Finley Babb has served on or held leadership positions on numerous organizations including the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, South Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Chairperson of the State Math Team, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, South Carolina Association of Advanced Mathematics Teachers, Phi Delta Kappa, Council of Presidential Awardees in Mathematics, State Mathematics Curriculum Frameworks Committee, Reader of Advanced Placement Math Exams for College Board, and many others; and

Whereas, because of her involvement, she has been honored with a myriad of awards such as a Technology Literacy Challenge Grant for $100,000 in 2000 and 2001, a Goals 2000 Grant for $100,000 - “Staff Development and Curriculum Alignment” in 1998 and 1999, State Technology Grant for $100,000 - “Raising the Standard: Curriculum Integration and Technology” in 1997 and 1998; SCAAPMT Outstanding Contribution to AP Mathematics Program in S.C. Award in 1994; and a Phi Delta Kappa Outstanding Administrator Award in 1993, to name just a few; and

Whereas, Mary Finley Babb has also been active in her community as a member of Liberty First Baptist Church, Board Member for Pickens County Behavioral Health Services, and the South Carolina Forestry Association; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are proud to honor Mary Finley Babb for her many contributions to education and to her community throughout her career. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and congratulate Mary Finley Babb of Easley upon her retirement as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction for the School District of Pickens County, to commend her for her many years of dedicated service to education, and to wish her much success and happiness in all of her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mary Finley Babb.
